About The Position

Join the Department of Transportation as a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic and help keep vehicles and equipment ready for the road! This role lets you use your mechanical skills to support safe travel across the state. You will take on hands-on tasks that keep essential equipment running smoothly. This position focuses on maintaining and repairing a wide range of vehicles and equipment used for transportation operations. You will apply mechanical knowledge to keep essential systems functioning safely and reliably.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of the commonwealth’s Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration)
  • Two years of journey level mechanic experience in the diagnosis and repair of automobiles, heavy trucks, or construction equipment, which includes one year of experience in the diagnosis and repair of diesel vehicles or equipment
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training
  • Possession of an active Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License and any endorsements necessary to operate specific vehicles or equipment
  • Possession of an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver's License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) and Manual Transmission Restriction (E) removed, or equivalent
  • Active Pennsylvania Class 1, Class 4, or Class 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification on the first day of employment
  • Active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations on the first day of employment
  • Active Pennsylvania Class 1, Class 4, or Class 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification during the probationary period
  • Pass the Department of Transportation’s New Mechanic Training course during the probationary period
  • Able to perform essential job functions

Responsibilities

  • Repair engines, transmissions, brakes, electrical components, and other vehicle systems
  • Inspect and service vehicles and equipment to reduce breakdowns and extend service life
  • Conduct official safety and emissions inspections and complete all required documentation
  • Identify problems using diagnostic tools and determine effective repair methods
  • Maintain and repair hand tools, construction devices, and shop equipment
  • Follow safety procedures, maintain a clean work area, and report hazards or injuries immediately
