As a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee with the Department of Transportation, you will enter a training path that builds strong technical abilities. This role supports the upkeep and repair of vehicles and equipment needed for safe transportation operations across the region. It provides hands-on learning while you develop strong mechanical skills.

Requirements

  • Two years as a Tradesman Helper (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration) working in the automotive field
  • Graduation from a post-high school diesel technology curriculum of an accredited trade or technical school
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training
  • Possess an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations on the first day of employment
  • Possess an active Pennsylvania Class 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification during the probationary period
  • Pass the Department of Transportation’s New Mechanic Training course during the probationary period
  • Employees may be required to obtain and maintain CDL endorsements and certifications necessary to operate specific pieces of equipment
  • Subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations
  • Must be able to perform essential job functions
  • A conditional offer of employment will require a drug screening

Responsibilities

  • Perform mechanical work on cars, trucks, and heavy equipment as training progresses
  • Complete routine maintenance tasks that help reduce equipment wear and extend service life
  • Identify mechanical issues and assist with selecting repair steps, procedures, and needed parts
  • Follow safety procedures, maintain clean work areas, and help prevent accidents
  • Maintain accurate information about completed repairs and equipment conditions
