As a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee with the Department of Transportation, you will join a team dedicated to keeping vital equipment running safely. Requirements

  • Two years as a Tradesman Helper (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration) working in the automotive field
  • Graduation from a post-high school diesel technology curriculum of an accredited trade or technical school
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training
  • Possess an active Class A or Class B Commercial Driver Learner's Permit or license on the first day of employment
  • Obtain an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) during the probationary period
  • Possess an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations on the first day of employment
  • Obtain a valid Pennsylvania Class 1, 4, or 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification during the probationary period
  • Pass the Department of Transportation’s New Mechanic Training course during the probationary period
  • Pass the Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations
  • Able to perform essential job functions

Responsibilities

  • Assist with repair and overhaul of cars, trucks, heavy equipment, and mechanical components
  • Carry out routine service and system checks on vehicles and equipment
  • Identify mechanical issues using diagnostic tools and follow proper repair methods
  • Follow safety procedures, maintain clean work areas, and support accident prevention efforts
  • Document equipment conditions, inspection results, and maintenance activities
  • Perform basic adjustments and support major repairs alongside experienced staff
