About The Position

The State of Connecticut, Department of Developmental Services (DDS) – South Southbury Training School is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Developmental Services Adult Services Instructor to support individuals in achieving meaningful employment, independence, and personal growth. In this role, you will develop and implement teaching strategies aligned with the Office of Protection and Advocacy for Persons with Disabilities (OPS) and Follow Along Plan (FAP), while providing individualized supports tailored to each person’s unique strengths, needs, and goals. The ideal candidate will actively participate in person-centered planning processes—including career planning, Individual Plans (IP), and futures planning—and collaborate closely with individuals, families, and support networks to identify desired outcomes. Responsibilities include assessing job compatibility, developing natural and community supports, adapting tools and materials to enhance accessibility, and connecting individuals with opportunities that match their interests and abilities. This position also involves active engagement in team committees and work groups, transporting individuals, and ensuring health and safety through medication administration, CPR, First Aid, and Physical/Psychological Management Training (PMT).

Requirements

• Four (4) years of experience in providing direct service to individuals with an intellectual disability.
• Must have a valid driver's license.
• Must be able to obtain an F-Endorsement on driver's license by the completion of the working test period.
• Will be required to travel.
• Must have the ability to obtain Medical Administration Certification from the Department of Developmental Services.

Responsibilities

• Develops teaching strategies consistent with goals of Office of Protection and Advocacy for Persons with Disabilities (OPS)/Follow Along Plan (FAP)
• Provides individual supports for individual specific needs as they relate to employment (individual job, group, sheltered) or habilitation
• Participates in person centered planning such as career planning, individual designs, Individual Plan (IP), transitional meetings and futures planning
• Consults with individuals (consumer, supporter and/or families) regarding program plans, futures plans and desired outcomes
• Assesses job compatibility for individuals
• Identifies and develops natural supports
• Assists with adaptation of materials (tools and equipment) to individuals ability
• Identifies and develops community resources and matches with individual interests
• Participates in intra-regional and intra-facility committees and work groups
• Transports individuals
• Administers medication, CPR and first aid
• Utilizes physical/psychological management training (PMT)
• May conduct, with supervision, individual assessments using standardized instruments for evaluation
• Develops, prepares and conducts in-service training programs to agency staff, including but not limited to physical/psychological management training, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and abuse and neglect prevention
• Tracks employee registration, attendance and course completion using a web-based learning management system
• Conducts new employee orientation which may include the use of web-based College of Direct Support (CDS)
• Conducts various presentations using multi-media equipment or computer-based presentation software
• Schedules training sessions and attendees
• Prepares reports
