Development Technician Student Intern

Rockwell Automation•Milwaukee, WI
•Onsite

About The Position

Rockwell Automation is seeking a student intern for a 10–12 week position supporting engineering activities involving prototype electromechanical systems, experimental design circuitry, and specialized test equipment. Applications include analog, digital, and power electronic systems. The intern works with engineers or technicians using schematics, diagrams, written and verbal descriptions, layouts, and defined plans to perform modifications, testing, checkout, and troubleshooting. With direction and guidance, the intern sets up tests, conducts qualification testing, and captures data for test reports while learning about power systems and testing. The role involves development and testing of variable frequency drives, testing components, subsystems, and products against specifications, and supporting development programs from design-concept evaluation through experimentation and prototype development. The intern uses test, development, and diagnostic instruments and software; follows laboratory safety and cleanliness procedures; prepares reports and documentation; and may travel to off-site facilities in the greater Milwaukee area for product qualification and certification testing. The schedule is arranged to accommodate school commitments, with work 2–3 days per week on first shift.

Requirements

  • Pursuing a technical degree.
  • Meet Rockwell Automation physical job requirements for laboratory work and equipment handling.

Nice To Haves

  • Soldering experience.
  • Experience using digital multimeters (DMMs).
  • Experience using oscilloscopes.
  • Experience safely working with high voltage (over 50V).

Responsibilities

  • Work with engineers and technicians to learn about development and testing of variable frequency drives.
  • Perform component, subsystem, and product testing, evaluating performance against specifications.
  • Maintain and develop technological skills for use in product testing and development processes.
  • Use and interpret test and development instrumentation, including digital oscilloscopes, voltage and current probes, tachometers, power supplies, signal generators, spectrum analyzers, EMC analyzers, surge generators, and partial discharge testers.
  • Follow laboratory procedures for safe and efficient use of electronic instrumentation, electrical power, rotating electrical machinery, and general laboratory cleanliness.
  • Write reports, test plans, and related or supporting documentation.
  • Assist with development programs, from evaluating design concepts through experimentation and prototype development, including engineering documentation.
  • Use hand and power tools to construct and fabricate prototype circuits, subsystems, and systems used in the power electronics industry.
  • Use software tools to work with and control the operation of a variable frequency drive (VFD).
  • Troubleshoot, solder components, and repair printed circuit boards.
  • Write legible, accurate experiment notes, including summaries interpreting test results and recommendations.
  • Use software tools such as SAP and Windchill.
  • Travel to off-site facilities in the greater Milwaukee area for EMC, shock, and vibration testing for product qualification and certification.
