Developer Advocate

Fireworks•San Francisco, CA
•$200,000 - $230,000•Onsite

About The Position

Fireworks is hiring a Developer Advocate at the Senior or Staff level to help developers choose Fireworks for building, fine-tuning, and serving open AI models in production. The role combines hands-on engineering with public technical communication: the advocate builds working code and demonstrations, explains technical topics to developer audiences, and helps establish standards for content, launches, and community engagement. The position is based in San Mateo, California, or London, with regular travel to conferences, hackathons, meetups, and partner events. Travel is expected to be approximately 20% to 25% in a typical quarter, concentrated around major events and launches. The London-based advocate will anchor Fireworks’ European developer presence, collaborate across time zones with a primarily US-based team, and travel periodically to the San Mateo headquarters. The advocate creates runnable technical resources, responds quickly to major model and technology launches, participates in developer communities on and off Fireworks properties, speaks and teaches at events, and conveys developer feedback to product and engineering. The role also measures outcomes such as adoption, activation, and time to first successful build. In the first year, success includes publishing respected technical work, producing authoritative launch resources quickly, establishing a recognized community presence, delivering talks and workshops, influencing product decisions through surfaced feedback, and creating standards that future advocates can use.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of combined engineering and developer-facing experience, with meaningful experience in both areas.
  • Strong Python skills and comfort with TypeScript or JavaScript.
  • Experience building and deploying applications and reviewing other developers’ sample code.
  • Hands-on experience with LLM APIs in production and at least one agent framework.
  • Personal experience fine-tuning, evaluating, and deploying a model.
  • Understanding of the factors that affect inference latency, throughput, and cost.
  • A public technical track record, such as technical writing, talks, videos, open-source work, or an established following, demonstrating the ability to explain complex topics to engineers.
  • Experience presenting at conferences, meetups, or workshops, with the ability to speak on short notice about recently shipped technology.
  • Ability to learn quickly, implement new research or techniques, assess them honestly, and maintain a systematic approach to staying current.
  • Ability to independently choose topics and own projects end to end.

Nice To Haves

  • Open-source contributions or maintainership in the AI/ML ecosystem, including inference engines, model libraries, agent frameworks, or evaluation tooling.
  • Expertise in inference optimization, serving architecture, post-training, or evaluation methodology.
  • Experience building an enduring content operation, launch process, events playbook, or community program.
  • Comfort making video.
  • Existing relationships with AI research or open-model communities.
  • Daily use of frontier coding agents and informed perspectives on their strengths and limitations.
  • Experience joining an early DevRel team and helping establish its operating practices.

Responsibilities

  • Build and publish runnable cookbooks, quickstarts, reference applications, and end-to-end tutorials that guide developers from an initial inference call to production-shaped applications.
  • Respond to significant model and technique launches with working demonstrations, honest benchmarks, and practical usage guides.
  • Develop internal processes for model access, evaluation harnesses, and publishing so launch content can be produced quickly and repeatably.
  • Engage with developers through Fireworks’ docs, blog, examples, cookbooks, Discord, and developer newsletter, as well as external platforms and open-source projects.
  • Answer developer questions publicly and turn recurring questions into lasting technical resources.
  • Contribute code to relevant open-source projects and review pull requests where useful.
  • Deliver conference talks, hands-on workshops, hackathon mentoring, and developer dinners; help choose events and build reusable presentation and workshop materials.
  • Bring evidence-based developer feedback, friction, feature gaps, and unmet needs to product and engineering teams, and communicate publicly when fixes ship.
  • Instrument and evaluate the impact of advocacy work, focusing on adoption, activation, and time to first successful build rather than impressions, booth scans, or attendance counts.
  • Help establish standards for technical content, launch response, and developer community engagement.

Benefits

  • Work on challenging AI infrastructure problems, including low-latency inference and scalable model serving.
  • Work with emerging technology that affects how businesses and developers use AI globally.
  • Ownership and direct impact on the future of AI in a fast-growing team.
  • Collaboration with experienced engineers and AI researchers.
