About The Position

The Charleston County Sheriff's Office is seeking to hire Juvenile Detention Deputies. This role involves working with youth aged 13-17 in a secure, 24-hour detention setting. Deputies must interact with residents in a fair, firm, compassionate, and consistent manner, reinforcing behavior expectations. The position offers comprehensive training and opportunities for career growth.

Requirements

At least 21 years old and a U.S. Citizen.
High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
A South Carolina licensed driver, or the ability to obtain one.
Honorably discharged from the military (if applicable).
No pending cases or criminal felony convictions (misdemeanors may require expungement).
No THC or Marijuana use within 365 days.
No student loans in default status.
Successful completion of a comprehensive hiring process, including background investigation, credit check, psychological evaluation, polygraph examination, oral interview, and pre-employment physical examination.
Must successfully complete the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy’s Basic Detention course of instruction within the first year of employment.

Qualified applicants with a college degree may receive enhanced compensation.
Master Detention Deputy positions are available for applicants who qualify (10+ years’ detention/corrections experience and/or military/additional education).

Responsibilities

Performing security, safety, and custodial care of residents.
Completing intake and releasing procedures.
Coordinating transportation for residents to court or medical appointments.
Providing guidance, care, and support to residents.
Responding to crisis situations in a safe and effective manner.

Benefits

Hourly Pay: $23.30 - $27.39 (based on education and experience).
Overtime (1.5x pay) possibilities.
Rotating 12.25-Hour Shifts (day/night rotation every 90 days).
Work week schedule: 4 days on, 4 days off, 2 days on, 2 days off.
Mandatory overtime in place (one additional shift per pay period).
Schedule known 1 year in advance.
Vested in the S.C. Police Retirement Plan in eight years.
