About The Position

The Charleston County Sheriff's Office is seeking to hire Juvenile Detention Deputies. This role involves working with youth aged 13-17 in a secure, 24-hour detention setting. Deputies must interact with residents in a fair, firm, compassionate, and consistent manner, reinforcing behavior expectations. The position offers comprehensive training and opportunities for career growth.

Requirements

  • At least 21 years old and a U.S. Citizen.
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • A South Carolina licensed driver, or the ability to obtain one.
  • Honorably discharged from the military (if applicable).
  • No pending cases or criminal felony convictions (misdemeanors may require expungement).
  • No THC or Marijuana use within 365 days.
  • No student loans in default status.
  • Successful completion of a comprehensive hiring process, including background investigation, credit check, psychological evaluation, polygraph examination, oral interview, and pre-employment physical examination.
  • Must successfully complete the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy’s Basic Detention course of instruction within the first year of employment.

  • Qualified applicants with a college degree may receive enhanced compensation.
  • Master Detention Deputy positions are available for applicants who qualify (10+ years’ detention/corrections experience and/or military/additional education).

Responsibilities

  • Performing security, safety, and custodial care of residents.
  • Completing intake and releasing procedures.
  • Coordinating transportation for residents to court or medical appointments.
  • Providing guidance, care, and support to residents.
  • Responding to crisis situations in a safe and effective manner.

Benefits

  • Hourly Pay: $23.30 - $27.39 (based on education and experience).
  • Overtime (1.5x pay) possibilities.
  • Rotating 12.25-Hour Shifts (day/night rotation every 90 days).
  • Work week schedule: 4 days on, 4 days off, 2 days on, 2 days off.
  • Mandatory overtime in place (one additional shift per pay period).
  • Schedule known 1 year in advance.
  • Vested in the S.C. Police Retirement Plan in eight years.
