About The Position

The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Detention Sergeant to join their team. This vital leadership role offers the opportunity to contribute to the safety and well-being of the community while fostering a positive and professional work environment for Detention Deputies. The position is primarily assigned to the Housing Division with rotating 12.25-hour shifts (4 days on, 4 days off, 2 days on, 2 days off; day shift 5:45am - 6:00pm and night shift 5:45pm - 6:00am, rotating day/night shift every 90 days). Opportunities may arise in other units within the Sheriff's Office. As a Detention Sergeant, you will be a key leader in the daily operations of the Detention Center, responsible for direct supervision, guidance, and mentorship to Detention Deputies, ensuring the safety, security, and orderly operation of the facility in accordance with all applicable laws, policies, and professional standards.

Requirements

  • Must be a citizen of the United States and at least 21 years of age.
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Valid South Carolina driver’s license or ability to obtain one prior to hire.
  • No criminal convictions.
  • Honorable discharge from military (if applicable).
  • Ability to attend and successfully complete the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy (if certification is not current).
  • Successful completion of a comprehensive hiring process, including background investigation, credit check, psychological evaluation, polygraph examination, oral interview, and pre-employment physical examination.

Nice To Haves

  • A minimum of 5 years or more of experience in law enforcement or detention supervisory roles is preferred.
  • Comparable experience in military leadership or other management roles may be considered.
  • Qualified applicants with a college degree may receive enhanced compensation.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily operations, conduct shift briefings, review reports, and provide constructive feedback to subordinates.
  • Coordinate inmate movement for medical appointments, court appearances, programs, and other necessary facility transitions.
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of emergency plans, medical procedures, and evacuation protocols; conduct daily facility inspections to ensure security operations are maintained.
  • Prepare and complete performance evaluations, ensure adherence to policies and procedures, and administer disciplinary action when necessary.
  • Serve as a mentor and facilitator, encouraging open communication and fostering a positive team dynamic.
  • May be required to report during hazardous weather or emergency conditions and be adaptable to performing duties across various departments within the Sheriff’s Office.
