Design Reliability Engineer

General Matter•Los Angeles, CA
•$85,000 - $180,000

About The Position

The Design Reliability Engineer is part of General Matter’s Design Reliability team, which ensures that designs are built as intended and work as required. The team evaluates and guides engineering designs from concept through operation so that the company’s uranium enrichment technology meets or exceeds internal design criteria and external requirements. It connects teams across the engineering organization, facilitates cross-disciplinary action and problem-solving, and ensures that interfaces and responsibilities are not missed. This role applies General Matter’s design process and criteria throughout concept and build; oversees design and change reviews; maintains configuration integrity and controlled technical documentation; manages design criteria and relationships among design elements in Stillsuit; and identifies, tracks, mitigates, and closes engineering risks. The engineer also builds an understanding of subsystem and team interfaces and automates review, document-control, and risk workflows, using AI where useful. The role suits someone seeking high impact in fast-paced, intense, Skunkworks-style projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in any STEM discipline.
  • Evidence of exceptional ability, such as prior projects, leadership of technical teams, completed hardware, or a portfolio of work.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and a high bar for accuracy in technical documentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to run meetings, drive decisions, and hold peers and more senior engineers accountable to commitments.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain required security clearance and access authorization.
  • Ability to work extended hours and weekends as necessary.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in design reliability, design assurance, configuration management, or systems engineering.
  • Systems engineering experience in aerospace or defense, or process engineering experience in chemical, energy, or semiconductor environments.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and P&IDs.
  • Experience automating engineering workflows, including use of AI tools.
  • Familiarity with change control, document control, or risk management processes such as CCB, MOC, FMEA, or risk registers.
  • Experience in fast-paced, resource-constrained startup environments.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the design process and design criteria are followed for enrichment technology from concept through build.
  • Run design reviews and determine whether designs are ready to move forward.
  • Facilitate cross-disciplinary discussions, capture decisions, assign actions with owners and due dates, and drive actions to closure.
  • Improve designs through close integration with hardware and engineering teams.
  • Run change reviews and confirm changes are evaluated, approved, and reflected across affected documents and teams.
  • Keep official design documents, drawings, and P&IDs controlled and current.
  • Manage design criteria and connections between design elements in Stillsuit so that designed, documented, and built systems match.
  • Surface engineering risks early, assign owners and mitigation plans, track risks, and drive them to closure.
  • Escalate promptly when risks or actions stall.
  • Build working knowledge of how subsystems and teams fit together.
  • Identify missing interfaces between teams and drive coordination to close them.
  • Automate review, document-control, and risk workflows, using AI where helpful.

Benefits

  • For full-time hires, potential eligibility for long-term incentives in the form of stock options.
