Asset Design Reliability Engineer

BLUE ORIGIN•West Melbourne, FL

About The Position

Join Blue Origin's Operations Reliability organization as an experienced Design Reliability Engineer. The role builds reliability into the ground systems, tooling, ground support equipment (GSE), and factory automation that enable rocket launches and manufacturing. The engineer works directly with design and manufacturing engineering teams to identify and eliminate failure modes before equipment reaches the floor. The position is responsible for design reliability activities across new tooling, GSE, and factory-automation projects, ensuring equipment is reliable from day one. It involves substantial time on the floor and in the field observing hardware and engaging with engineering and operations stakeholders. This role is part of Blue Origin Operations, which includes Integrated Supply Chain, Test Operations, Safety, Quality, and Mission Assurance, and supports manufacturing and supply chain across Blue Origin facilities. Applicants must meet the stated U.S. citizenship or immigration-status requirements. The position may require off-shift or weekend support during critical builds or investigations and travel 25% of the time.

Requirements

  • B.S. degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Aerospace, or a related engineering field.
  • At least 2 years of experience in reliability, design, or systems engineering in a manufacturing, aerospace, or high-consequence operations environment.
  • Experience leading FMEA, design reviews, and reliability assessments on mechanical, fluids, electrical, or controls systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, fluid schematics, and electrical circuit diagrams.
  • Strong communication and influencing skills, including the ability to drive design changes across engineering teams that do not report to you.
  • Availability to support off-shift or weekend work during critical builds or investigations.
  • Willingness to travel 25% of the time.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with ground support equipment, tooling, or factory automation in a launch, aerospace, or high-rate manufacturing environment.
  • Familiarity with reliability engineering tools such as FMECA, fault tree analysis, or reliability block diagrams.
  • Experience authoring or improving design standards, reliability requirements, or engineering procedures.
  • Experience with Maximo, SAP, or other CMMS/ERP platforms for asset lifecycle management.
  • Experience supporting commissioning and early-use stabilization of new equipment or systems.

Responsibilities

  • Lead Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and design reviews for new tooling, GSE, and factory-automation projects to identify and close reliability risks before release.
  • Define and enforce reliability requirements during design, partnering with design and manufacturing engineering teams to drive changes.
  • Track and disposition reliability findings through design, build, and early operations, ensuring risks are resolved rather than deferred.
  • Develop and maintain reliability standards, design guidelines, and engineering procedures for ground systems and tooling.
  • Support commissioning and early-use stabilization of new equipment, translating design-phase findings into maintenance plans and operational guidance.
  • Build lightweight metrics and visibility tools to track design reliability performance and guide priorities across the portfolio.
  • Spend significant time on the floor and in the field observing hardware, engaging with engineering and operations stakeholders, and closing the loop on design changes.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Basic and supplemental life insurance.
