About The Position

Roto is seeking an experienced Design Director to lead multidisciplinary teams in designing and developing museums, aquariums, zoos, science centers, cultural attractions, and other experience-driven environments. The role provides creative leadership from early concept and master planning through detailed design and installation. The Design Director mentors team members and collaborates closely with clients and internal disciplines to deliver engaging, thoughtfully designed experiences.

The position is remote-friendly and open to candidates in Ohio, Massachusetts, Nevada, and/or Florida. It is based at ROTO in Dublin, Ohio, and is full-time, with a stated salary range of $90,000 to $115,000 per year.

Requirements

• At least 8 years of experience leading multidisciplinary design teams in exhibit, experiential, environmental, or museum design.
• A portfolio of built museum, attraction, or similar visitor experiences in which the candidate played a lead creative role.
• Confidence presenting to clients and facilitating design conversations.
• Experience on design-build projects or working closely with fabrication.
• Master planning experience.
• Proficiency with SketchUp, Adobe Creative Suite, AutoCAD, and/or Revit.

Responsibilities

• Set the creative vision for multiple museum and attraction projects, from early visioning and master planning through detailed design and installation.
• Lead a multidisciplinary team of exhibit designers, graphic designers, writers, producers, and technical specialists.
• Own client relationships on the creative side by presenting concepts, leading design workshops, and building trust with museum leadership.
• Shape concepts that balance storytelling, visitor experience, operations, and budget, working closely with fabrication and engineering teams to ensure ideas are built well.
• Mentor designers and build a studio culture of curiosity, critique, and craft.
• Manage quality, schedule, and resources across a portfolio of projects.
