About The Position

The Deputy State Fire Marshal (DSFM) is responsible for completing fire and life safety construction plan reviews, field acceptance tests of fire and life safety systems to determine compliance with state and federal requirements, laws and standards. Plan review services are provided for various occupancy types, including schools, state licensed care facilities, prisons, commercial and residential uses. The position reports to a chief deputy state fire marshal who reports to the assistant state fire marshal in charge of the Prevention Division. This position is required to interact regularly with project architects and contractors, Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, and with other agencies that contract for construction plan review services. The position interacts with other professional and support staff within the Bureau and Division to accomplish the positions work.

Requirements

  • Must possess a valid, unrestricted Washington State Driver's License or able to obtain one within 30 days of employment.
  • High school diploma/ GED equivalent.
  • Two years of experience as a fire prevention officer, code enforcement officer: or insurance industry inspector.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively analyze information and communicate decisions and recommendations related to fire and life safety requirements.
  • Organization and time management skills; knowledge and ability to apply state construction methods and materials.

Responsibilities

  • Perform fire and life safety construction plan review of various occupancy types to ensure compliance with state and federal requirements, laws and standards.
  • Overtime may be required to fulfill plan review functions.
  • Perform final acceptance tests of fire and life safety systems to ensure compliance with state and federal requirements, laws and standards.
  • Overtime may be required to fulfill acceptance testing functions.
  • Provides technical code review and analysis for programs within the Prevention Division.
  • Develops and presents fire and life safety prevention programs.
