About The Position

Performs law enforcement work in support of assigned Emergency Management department. Duties include protecting life and property, preparing and maintaining records and enforcing laws, rules and orders. Positions in this class perform routine law enforcement and identify needed corrective actions to resolve discrepancies; answer questions; and maintain documents and records.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • One (1) year of experience as a Deputy performing law enforcement and/or safety support work in the field of public relations; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
  • Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) certification is required
  • Tasks require the ability to exert medium physical effort in medium work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of heavy weight (50 - 100 pounds).
  • Tasks may involve extended periods of time climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motion at a keyboard or work station.
  • Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds and visual cues or signals.
  • Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
  • Essential functions are regularly performed with exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
  • Exposure to damp/wet surfaces, duty conditions, fumes and odors.
  • This position is subject to a six (6) month probationary period prior to Civil Service eligibility.
  • Must submit to a Civil Service Exam.

Responsibilities

  • Protects and serves the citizens in the community and protects property; maintains order; enforces State, County and Federal Law; safe guard lives and property.
  • Inspects staff paperwork which include, daily activity logs, incident reports and all other daily paperwork; assists with walkthroughs, searches and all daily inspections.
  • Enforces rules and regulations and assists with problems deputies may encounter including physical intervention and emergency assistance; resolves problems that may arise in a proactive and professional manner.
  • Assists law enforcement and fire departments with search and rescue activities; assists other agencies in Cameron County with any needs they may need in order to ensure Emergency Plan tasks are accomplished.
  • Assists Emergency Management with Hurricane preparedness to educate our citizens; assists with disaster evaluations to determine monetary loss.
  • Educates the public regarding life safety in the home and/or work place.
  • Provides assistance and information to employees, managers, vendors, citizens, local businesses, and/or and other interested parties regarding fire prevention and fire code enforcement functions; serves as liaison between supervisors, vendors, and other departments in regards to the fire code enforcement.
  • Explains policies and procedures.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
