About The Position

This position involves routine protective services work in maintaining the security and care of inmates at the County Jail and ensuring the security of the Roanoke County Courthouse Complex. Responsibilities include processing inmates, conducting security checks and searches, managing inmate mail, transporting inmates, attending to inmate needs, maintaining logs, supervising cleaning details, monitoring individuals entering and leaving the jail, processing entrants through security checkpoints, searching courtrooms for contraband, escorting and supervising inmates in the courthouse, and serving civil and criminal papers. The Deputy Sheriff I may be assigned to corrections, court services, or administrative divisions, performing various duties within each. The position requires 12-hour shifts, with a total of 24 hours of coverage needed. Salary is based on prior credible service. Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.
Valid Virginia driver's license with good driving record.
Must be a citizen of the United States.
Twenty-one (21) years of age.
Complete the minimum training standards required by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services.
Subject to a complete criminal history background search with acceptable results.
Must be able to perform the job as described in the Physical and Environmental Demands section of this job description.

Nice To Haves

Some experience in public and personal contact work preferably related to law enforcement activities.

Responsibilities

Processes inmates into custody of the County Jail, searches prisoners, takes charge of personal property, provides clothing, bedding, eating utensils, institutional rules and regulations.
Conducts periodic security checks of inmates in assigned areas.
Maintains log of inmate movement throughout the facility.
Conducts periodic cell searches for possession of contraband.
Reviews incoming and outgoing mail.
Monitors persons entering and leaving jail.
Supervises cleaning details for assigned areas.
Transports inmates as required.
Attends to special needs of inmates.
Processes all entrants of the courthouse through the security screening process.
Maintains control of the courtroom to prevent any disruptions.
Protects judges, court officials, witnesses, jurors and all other persons in the courtroom from any hostile acts directed at them.
Supervise, escort/transport, restrain and control prisoners.
Properly process prisoners, delayed confinement persons & juveniles.
Properly serve Civil & Criminal papers.
Performs interior and exterior security searches of the courthouse.
