About The Position

The Deputy Sheriff performs work involving general duty police work in the protection of life and property through the enforcement of County laws and other pertinent local and State laws. The position may be assigned to any of the divisions of the Department and involves work under general supervision, which includes an element of personal danger. The duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not necessarily limited to, enforcing laws, patrolling assigned areas, investigating suspicious conditions and complaints, making arrests, handling traffic violations and accidents, assisting in emergencies, restoring order, conducting investigations of serious crimes, serving legal papers, performing jailer duties, overseeing prisoners, appearing in court, assisting on medical calls, and maintaining records.

Requirements

U.S. citizenship and a resident of Iowa upon employment
Age 18 or older and have not reached your 60th birthday at the time of appointment
Current Iowa driver's license or the ability to obtain one before the date of hire
Ability to read and write the English language
High school diploma or GED
Good physical, mental, and emotional condition as determined by a physician; pass drug screening test
Uncorrected vision of not worse than 20/100 in either eye, correctable to 20/20, and normal color vision
Normal hearing in each ear
Not be addicted to drugs or alcohol, be of good moral character as determined by a thorough background investigation, and have not been convicted of a felony
Not, by reason of conscience or belief, be opposed to the use of force, when appropriate or necessary to fulfill duties
Must attend the Linn County Civil Service Commission physical fitness and written exams
Must have valid driver's license and social security card at the time of testing
Must pass all three sections of the physical fitness standards to be eligible to take the written exam

Responsibilities

Enforcing the laws of the County and all other pertinent local and State laws
Patrolling an assigned area, checking doors and windows and examining premises of unoccupied buildings or residences in order to detect any suspicious conditions in a motorized police vehicle
Investigating suspicious conditions and complaints and making arrests of persons who violate the law
Making traffic arrests and giving violation tickets to those who break traffic laws, aiding motorists, and investigating traffic accidents
Assisting in cases of fires, accidents, rescues, hazardous materials, and disorders in assigned areas as directed
Restoring order, regulating traffic and preparing necessary reports
Conducting investigations of serious crimes and accidental deaths; preserving the scene of the crime, interviewing victims, witnesses and suspects; following up leads and presenting cases to the County Attorney's Office
Serving warrants, subpoenas, and legal papers; handling and supervising evictions, performing repossessions, and placing liens as necessary
Performing the duties of a jailer, including booking and processing prisoners, fingerprinting and photographing prisoners, and screening visitors
Overseeing the care and custody of prisoners and mental health patients, escorting prisoners from the jail to the courthouse or other institutions
Appearing in court as the arresting officer
Assisting on medical calls with CPR and first aid
Maintaining records and preparing reports
Performing all other related duties as assigned
