About The Position

School Resource Officers (Elementary) are assigned to one or more County elementary schools to provide information to the students, parents and staff regarding law enforcement and the criminal justice system. SRO’s maintain high visibility at the schools, attending student functions as well as teaching curriculum units and providing classroom presentations on varied topics. Performs responsible protective service work in the Sheriff’s Office involving a variety of general or support duty assignments and involving an element of personal danger; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of a School Resource Officer Sergeant.

Requirements

  • Prior law enforcement experience REQUIRED.
  • Must have completed or be able to complete School Resource Officer basic course
  • Must possess or obtain Virginia DCJS Law Enforcement Certification (road/patrol)
  • Previous law enforcement experience (federal, state, local), in a sworn position, REQUIRED
  • High school diploma or high school equivalency (GED) required.
  • Driver’s license valid in the state of Virginia
  • United States citizenship required
  • Must be at least 21 years of age at time of hire
  • Must meet and maintain all Stafford County Sheriff’s Office and State Criminal Justice System training and education requirements for position
  • Must have completed or be able to complete School Resource Officer basic course
  • The successful applicant must pass physical abilities testing, interview, polygraph examination, full background investigation to include a criminal history check, physical examination, psychological examination and drug and alcohol testing.
  • Stafford County Deputies are required to reside in the Commonwealth of Virginia and be in possession of a valid VA driver’s license within 60 days of establishing residency.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior law enforcement experience REQUIRED. $29.36 per hour + 1:1 credit for years of Sworn Law Enforcement service up to 10 years or 50%, whichever is greater.

Responsibilities

  • Enforces laws; investigates criminal activity; maintains records and files; prepares reports; testifies in court;
  • Patrols assigned school(s) and ensures a safe environment for students, staff, and visitors;
  • Maintains situational awareness of visitors and activities at the school;
  • Intervenes and appropriately responds to any threats toward teachers, students, and visitors;
  • Conducts daily inspections of the school to ensure all physical security measures are in place and working appropriately;
  • Works collaboratively with schools to resolve problems that threaten the safety of the schools;
  • Responds to radio dispatches and answers calls and complaints for their assigned school(s);
  • Makes arrests, forcibly if necessary, using handcuffs and other restraints, testifying in court if necessary;
  • Subdues resisting suspects using weapons, maneuvers and other approved self-defense methods;
  • Participates in school's lockdown and other emergency preparedness drills;
  • Performs a variety of crime prevention and youth outreach duties including participating in Sheriff’s Office summer youth camps;
  • Completes daily activity reports and other law enforcement reports and documentation as needed.
  • Engages with students to help improve the relationship with students to increase the likelihood that students report criminal activity and help reduce delinquent behavior within schools and the community;
  • Provides classroom presentations on crime prevention and fundamental concepts and structure of the law and other law enforcement topics;
  • Coordinates and oversees youth programs;
  • Coordinates security coverage for after school activities and events that produce large crowds;
  • Performs related tasks as required

  • Full salary range for this career is $61,078.788 - $112,021.10
