About The Position

This position will be considered classified-exempt and “at will.” The Deputy Secretary/Deputy Commissioner provides executive-level support to the Cabinet Secretary and Commissioner of the Department of Transportation in planning, organizing, and directing major programs across the Department of Transportation. The role leads policy development, coordinates cross-division initiatives, manages intergovernmental relationships, and serves as acting department head when delegated.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • Ten (10) years of professional experience demonstrating skill in leading administrative operations, coordinating programs across divisions or agencies, and analyzing complex fiscal or operational information.
  • Supervisory or administrative leadership and executive-level communication with internal and external officials.

Responsibilities

  • Supports creation, evaluation, and integration of department policies and procedures.
  • Monitors program performance and recommends improvements to strengthen efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Provides guidance to the Cabinet Secretary and Commissioner on administrative operations and strategic initiatives.
  • Assists with legislative proposals and maintains productive relationships with legislative officials.
  • Coordinates plans and programs with divisions, agencies, and federal, state, and local partners.
  • Serves as department head in the Secretary’s absence.
