About The Position

This position involves planning, performing, and documenting inspections of commercial and public buildings to ensure compliance with the City Fire Code, state codes, and regulations. Inspections are conducted based on code requirements, as well as in response to requests, complaints, and in support of other government agencies. The role also includes assisting in the development, coordination, planning, implementation, and presentation of fire safety educational training programs for schools and other locations, educating the public on fire safety. Periodic inspections of commercial, industrial, and institutional buildings, including daycare and foster homes, will be conducted. The Deputy Fire Marshal will also complete Certificates of Occupancy inspections, create reports for new businesses, execute complaint inspections, and respond to calls regarding hazards like gas leaks and vacant buildings. A key aspect of the role is educating owners and managers on maintaining fire-safe business environments. The position requires representing the City at various functions, including civic associations, business workshops, and community events, and presenting fire education programs to diverse audiences. This includes teaching, organizing, and preparing materials, adapting methods for different age groups and needs, and coordinating volunteer firefighters for fire prevention activities, such as the Pasadena Fire Safety House. The role also involves assisting in the development, implementation, and delivery of educational programs and demonstrations, providing classroom instruction on fire/life safety hazards, and preparing displays and exhibits. Continuous professional development through seminars, conferences, and classes is expected to enhance knowledge of fire prevention practices and generate ideas for new educational programs.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum one year experience, and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must demonstrate satisfactory knowledge of fire inspections and City ordinances.
  • Must possess a valid Texas driver's license and a good driving record.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with public speaking and/or presentation of fire prevention programs.
  • Higher education coursework in public speaking and/or technical communications.
  • NFPA Plan Review certification.

Responsibilities

  • Perform and document inspections of commercial and public buildings, including licensed facilities, in support of the City Fire Code, and state codes and regulations.
  • Conduct inspections initiated by code, or in response to requests, complaints, and/or in support of other government agencies.
  • Assist in the development, coordination, planning, implementation, and presentation of fire safety educational training programs in schools and other project locations.
  • Conduct periodic inspections of commercial, industrial, and institutional buildings within city limits, including daycare and foster homes.
  • Complete Certificates of Occupancy inspections and create required reports for all new businesses.
  • Execute complaint inspections and respond to complaint calls regarding gas leaks, vacant buildings, and other fire hazards.
  • Educate owners and managers on the importance of keeping their places of business free of fire hazards.
  • Represent the City at various functions and programs, including civic associations and civic organization presentations, local business employee workshops, and other community events.
  • Present fire education programs to businesses, various groups, and public/private schools.
  • Teach, organize, and prepare materials to be taught, adapting teaching methods to the appropriate age level and needs of the audience.
  • Coordinate the participation of volunteer firefighters with fire prevention programs and activities, including the Pasadena Fire Safety House.
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and delivery of educational programs and demonstrations.
  • Provide classroom instruction for fire/life safety hazards.
  • Prepare displays and exhibits relating to fire prevention and fire safety; dispense fire safety pamphlets and handouts.
  • Attend seminars, conferences, and classes to upgrade knowledge of fire prevention practices and to obtain ideas for improving and developing new educational programs.
