About The Position

Santa Clara University School of Law seeks a qualified candidate to serve as Deputy Clinic Director for its International Human Rights Clinic during the Spring 2020 term (January 1 through May 31). The International Human Rights Clinic (“Clinic”) provides unique opportunities for law students to gain first-hand experience working on international human rights litigation, advocacy, and policy projects. The Clinic combines classroom education with supervised case and project management, providing students with practical training in essential lawyering skills while serving our community and promoting social justice. The Deputy Clinic Director will work under the supervision of the Clinic Director.

Requirements

• JD degree required; or comparable degree from a law school outside the United States.
• At least five years of experience as a practicing lawyer, including experience litigating issues related to international human rights in U.S., foreign and/or international tribunals
• Experience litigating and counseling on human rights advocacy issues, drafting and reviewing policy initiatives, drafting and analyzing international and domestic normative frameworks.
• Experience in legal clinical teaching, supervision, training, and mentoring students.
• Excellent organizational and planning skills, and ability to work independently.

Responsibilities

• Provide instruction in the seminars of the International Human Rights Clinic.
• Directly Supervise students and, in partnership with the Clinic Director, assist with the direct supervision of law students in clinic cases and projects before international, regional, and domestic fora.
• Counsel and mentor students, including advancing student job opportunities
• Assist the Director in the administration and operation of the Clinic’s programs, projects and activities.
• Supervise administration of the Clinic.
