Database Engineer

Intapp•US IL Remote, IL

About The Position

Intapp’s Database Engineering team operates the database platforms behind its cloud products and is responsible for their health, performance, security, and availability across multiple Microsoft Azure regions. The Database Engineer works hands-on with SQL Server and Snowflake, contributing to coverage in U.S. time zones, including incident response and on-call support. The role investigates issues to root cause, automates repeatable work, and safely makes production changes. The engineer operates a multi-region SQL Server fleet on Azure virtual machines with Always On availability groups and administers Snowflake accounts. The work includes production change management, performance troubleshooting, high availability and disaster recovery, security controls, automation, monitoring, and development of AI tooling for database operations. The position requires availability during U.S. business hours, participation in an on-call rotation, and after-hours maintenance windows. The team is distributed across Europe and North America.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of hands-on production experience with SQL Server as a DBA or database engineer, including on-call support for systems that run around the clock.
  • Deep knowledge of Always On availability groups and Windows Server Failover Clustering, including synchronization modes, failover behavior, and troubleshooting.
  • Strong knowledge of backup, restore, and recovery models, with experience designing and testing disaster recovery.
  • Proven performance tuning skills, including wait statistics, execution plans, Query Store, indexing, and blocking analysis.
  • An evidence-based troubleshooting approach: forming hypotheses, proving them with data, and explaining root cause clearly.
  • Experience running SQL Server on Azure, including virtual machines and storage, virtual networks and private endpoints, Azure Key Vault, and Microsoft Entra ID.
  • Ability to work independently and make sound decisions during incidents when most of the team is offline, while knowing when to escalate.
  • Availability for U.S. business hours, an on-call rotation, and after-hours maintenance windows.
  • Clear written and spoken English and a collaborative style across a team distributed over Europe and North America.

Nice To Haves

  • Hands-on Snowflake administration, including warehouses, role-based access control, secure data sharing, and cost monitoring.
  • Hands-on experience with Terraform and scripting in PowerShell or Python, and a habit of automating repeatable work.
  • Experience with recent SQL Server versions and features such as optimized locking, accelerated database recovery, and intelligent query processing.
  • Experience building CI/CD pipelines in Azure DevOps and working with Grafana, OpenTelemetry, and PagerDuty.
  • Experience using AI tools in engineering work or building internal tooling such as MCP servers.
  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate (DP-300) or a Snowflake SnowPro certification.
  • Experience supporting compliance requirements in highly regulated industries.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the U.S. time-zone on-call rotation, respond to incidents, drive mitigation, lead root cause analysis, and keep runbooks current.
  • Operate a multi-region SQL Server fleet on Azure virtual machines with Always On availability groups, including capacity planning and workload balancing.
  • Administer Snowflake accounts, warehouses, role-based access, secure data sharing, and cost monitoring.
  • Plan and execute production changes through change management, including after-hours maintenance windows for cumulative updates, major version upgrades, failovers, and scaling.
  • Investigate performance problems using wait statistics, execution plans, and Query Store; partner with product engineering on query and schema design; and work with Microsoft and Snowflake support on engine-level issues.
  • Maintain high availability, disaster recovery, and security controls, including backup and restore, recovery exercises, transparent data encryption, key rotation, Microsoft Entra ID authentication, private endpoints, and least-privilege access.
  • Automate provisioning and operations with Terraform, PowerShell, and Python through CI/CD pipelines.
  • Build SQL Server and Snowflake monitoring with Grafana and OpenTelemetry.
  • Use AI tools in daily work and help build AI tooling for database operations, such as Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers.
