About The Position

Sauce Labs is seeking an early-career Data Center Engineer to own day-to-day physical operations at its Atlanta data center. The engineer supports a real-device cloud of more than 8,000 physical iOS and Android devices, their host computers, and the supporting servers and network, helping keep the fleet online and available to customers. This is an on-site role serving as the hands, eyes, and first line of troubleshooting for the global infrastructure team. Occasional remote work may be offered when appropriate and based on business need. Domestic travel of up to 20% may be required to support work at other data center locations. The role calls for data center fundamentals including racking, power, cabling, hardware diagnostics, and production-environment experience, while building engineering skills such as scripting repetitive work, reviewing metrics, documenting procedures, and taking problems from initial alert through root cause. The standard schedule is Monday through Friday, with participation in a rotating after-hours on-call schedule and occasional after-hours or weekend work for scheduled maintenance. A background check is required for data center access.

Requirements

  • At least 2 years of hands-on work in a production data center, colocation facility, or large lab environment.
  • Working knowledge of rack power, including PDUs, circuits, amperage, and building racks within power budgets.
  • Knowledge of fiber and copper cabling types, optics, patching, labeling, and cable management.
  • Hardware diagnostics on servers and network equipment, including reading status lights, swapping components, and using out-of-band management.
  • Networking fundamentals including TCP/IP, VLANs, DHCP, and DNS, sufficient to distinguish cabling issues from configuration issues.
  • Comfort using the Linux and macOS command line to navigate systems, read logs, and run basic commands.
  • Experience with an asset inventory or ticketing system and the discipline to maintain accurate records.
  • Clear written communication and the ability to document fixes so others can repeat them.
  • Ability to lift and move equipment up to 50 pounds and work safely with team lifts and lifting equipment for heavier equipment.
  • Ability to stand, bend, kneel, and work on ladders for extended periods in a loud, temperature-controlled environment.
  • Ability to participate in rotating after-hours on-call coverage and occasional after-hours and weekend maintenance work.
  • Ability to travel domestically up to 20% of the time.
  • Pass a background check required for data center access.

Nice To Haves

  • Bash or Python scripting to automate routine tasks.
  • Hands-on experience with iOS and Android devices at scale, including provisioning, debugging with ADB or Xcode tools, or MDM.
  • Experience with managed USB hubs or large USB device deployments.
  • Experience with monitoring tools such as Grafana and Prometheus.
  • Exposure to Device42 or a similar DCIM or CMDB tool.
  • Exposure to Git, CI/CD, or infrastructure-as-code tools.
  • Industry certifications such as CompTIA A+, Network+, Server+, or CDCTP.
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in IT, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent experience.

Responsibilities

  • Keep physical iOS and Android devices online and bookable; diagnose offline devices and restore them to service.
  • Build, cable, and maintain device racks, including host computers, managed USB hubs, and device trays; swap, provision, and decommission devices.
  • Identify and remove devices showing battery swelling, heat damage, or physical wear; perform device repairs and battery swaps.
  • Support macOS and Linux hosts that drive devices, gather logs, and report patterns to engineering.
  • Rack, stack, cable, and label servers, switches, and storage according to standards.
  • Plan rack builds within power capacity, track rack- and PDU-level power use, and plan airflow and cooling for installed equipment.
  • Install, upgrade, and replace hardware; run and test fiber and copper cabling.
  • Use out-of-band tools such as iDRAC and iLO to check, reboot, and recover servers.
  • Own physical hardware, connectivity, power, cooling, and other issues from first alert to root cause, escalating with clear findings when needed.
  • Monitor dashboards and alerts, act before customers are affected, and provide on-site support to remote engineers during incidents and maintenance windows.
  • Document failures, causes, and preventive measures.
  • Maintain accurate asset inventory; receive shipments, track equipment check-in and check-out, and conduct regular inventory audits.
  • Process RMAs and coordinate equipment returns with vendors.
  • Write and maintain runbooks and build standards that other technicians can follow independently.
  • Identify repetitive manual work and automate it with scripts or tooling.
  • Follow physical access and security procedures, escort and log vendors and visitors, and support data center access, change, and asset-handling compliance requirements.
  • Comply with department- and organization-wide security policies and procedures and apply a security-first approach.

  • Disability insurance.
  • Life insurance.
  • Parental leave benefits.
