Sauce Labs Inc.•Atlanta, GA
•$86,000 - $96,000•Onsite

About The Position

Sauce Labs is seeking an early-career Data Center Engineer to own day-to-day physical operations at its Atlanta data center. The facility supports a large real-device cloud with more than 8,000 physical iOS and Android devices, host computers, servers, and networking equipment. The engineer keeps this fleet online and available to customers, serving as the on-site hands, eyes, and first line of troubleshooting for the global infrastructure team. The role requires solid data center fundamentals and offers opportunities to build engineering skills through scripting, metrics analysis, procedure writing, and end-to-end problem ownership. This is an in-person, on-site role in Atlanta. Occasional remote work may be offered where appropriate based on business need. Domestic travel of up to 20% may be required to support hands-on work at other data center locations. The standard schedule is Monday through Friday, with participation in a rotating after-hours on-call schedule and occasional after-hours or weekend work for scheduled maintenance windows.

Requirements

  • At least 2 years of hands-on work in a production data center, colocation facility, or large lab environment.
  • Working knowledge of rack power, including PDUs, circuits, amperage, and building within a rack power budget.
  • Knowledge of fiber and copper cabling types, optics, patching, labeling, and cable management.
  • Ability to diagnose server and network hardware, read status lights, swap components, and use out-of-band management.
  • Networking fundamentals including TCP/IP, VLANs, DHCP, and DNS, sufficient to distinguish cabling problems from configuration problems.
  • Comfort using Linux and macOS command lines to navigate systems, read logs, and run basic commands.
  • Experience with an asset inventory or ticketing system and the discipline to maintain accurate records.
  • Clear written communication and ability to document fixes for others to repeat.
  • Ability to lift and move equipment up to 50 lbs and safely use team lifts and lifting equipment for heavier gear.
  • Ability to stand, bend, kneel, and work on ladders for extended periods in a loud, temperature-controlled environment.
  • Pass a background check required for data center access.
  • Comply with company security policies and procedures and use a security-first approach.

Nice To Haves

  • Scripting in Bash or Python to automate routine tasks.
  • Hands-on experience with iOS and Android devices at scale, including provisioning, debugging with ADB or Xcode tools, or MDM.
  • Experience with managed USB hubs or large USB device deployments.
  • Experience with monitoring tools such as Grafana and Prometheus.
  • Exposure to Device42 or a similar DCIM or CMDB tool.
  • Exposure to Git, CI/CD, or infrastructure-as-code tools.
  • Industry certifications such as CompTIA A+, Network+, Server+, or CDCTP.
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in IT, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent experience.

Responsibilities

  • Keep real iOS and Android devices online and bookable; diagnose offline devices and restore them to service.
  • Build, cable, and maintain device racks, including host computers, managed USB hubs, and device trays.
  • Swap, provision, and decommission devices; remove devices with battery swelling, heat damage, or physical wear.
  • Repair devices and perform battery swaps.
  • Support macOS and Linux hosts that drive devices; gather logs and report patterns to engineering.
  • Rack, stack, cable, and label servers, switches, and storage according to standards.
  • Plan rack builds within power capacity and track usage at rack and PDU levels.
  • Install, upgrade, and replace hardware; run and test fiber and copper cabling.
  • Use out-of-band tools such as iDRAC and iLO to check, reboot, and recover servers.
  • Plan airflow and cooling for rack-installed equipment.
  • Own hardware, connectivity, power, cooling, and other physical issues from first alert to root cause, escalating with clear findings when needed.
  • Monitor dashboards and alerts and act before customers are affected.
  • Provide on-site support during incidents and maintenance windows for remote engineers.
  • Document failures, causes, and preventive measures.
  • Maintain accurate asset inventory records for devices, hosts, and parts.
  • Receive shipments, check equipment in and out, conduct regular inventory audits, and process RMAs and vendor returns.
  • Write and maintain runbooks and build standards that technicians can follow independently.
  • Identify repetitive manual work and automate it with scripts or tooling.
  • Follow physical access and security procedures; escort and log vendors and visitors.
  • Support data center access, change, and asset-handling compliance requirements.
  • Participate in a rotating on-call schedule and occasional after-hours or weekend maintenance work.
  • Travel domestically up to 20% to support builds and projects at other data centers.
