About The Position

Delaware North Gaming is hiring a part-time Daily Starter at Finger Lakes Gaming in Farmington, New York. Under the direction of the Racing Secretary, the Daily Starter oversees the operations of the starting department in accordance with company, state, and gaming commission standards, policies, and laws. Finger Lakes Gaming & Racetrack features video gaming machines, live thoroughbred racing from April to November, year-round simulcast wagering, and dining options.

Requirements

• No high school diploma or GED is required.
• At least five years of related experience, including racetrack and supervisory experience.
• Must be licensed and approved by the required Gaming Commission.
• Experience with Thoroughbred horses is required.
• Manual dexterity sufficient to maneuver around horses.
• Ability to stand, crouch, and climb to perform duties.
• Ability to lift, push, and pull up to 75 pounds.
• Visual acuity sufficient to know activity in the surrounding area.

Nice To Haves

• Experience as a jockey or trainer is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Oversee the training and loading of horses in the gate before each race and assist with emergencies on the track.
• Place unruly horses on the starter’s list until they have been properly schooled at the gate.
• Maintain contact with outriders and stewards before, during, and after races.
• Maintain knowledge of the union contract as it pertains to Assistant Starters.
• Supervise work by planning and scheduling assignments and overseeing staff performance development and appraisal.
