About The Position

This position performs heavy manual cleaning work in and around schools, buildings, and grounds. The custodian maintains clean, safe, and sanitary facilities, assists with room and event setups, and performs basic lawn and grounds maintenance. The position involves indoor and outdoor work, extended standing and movement, handling cleaning chemicals, and frequently lifting, carrying, moving, or positioning objects weighing 20 to 50 pounds. This is a 12-month position.

Requirements

Completion of eighth grade, with proof if attainable, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Some knowledge of methods and equipment used in custodial tasks.
Ability to understand and follow instructions.
Ability to perform work requiring strength.
Ability to work continuously for hours while standing.
Ability to learn routine custodial and janitorial duties.
Ability to stand for most of the day and frequently lift, carry, move, or position objects weighing 20 to 50 pounds.
Ability to work indoors and outdoors and handle cleaning solvents and solutions.
Proper use of assigned personal protective devices and equipment.

Responsibilities

Empty trash containers, pencil sharpeners, and other receptacles.
Clean chalk trays and chalkboards; dust ledges, furniture, lights, and similar surfaces; and replace spent light bulbs.
Refill restroom dispensers.
Strip, clean, burnish, and apply finish to hard-surface floors; vacuum and shampoo carpets.
Clean and disinfect drinking fountains and help maintain clean, safe, and sanitary toilet, shower, and dining-room facilities.
Wash walls, windows, and other glass surfaces.
Follow instructions for proper use and mixture of chemicals and supplies.
Assist lunchroom and warehouse personnel with stacking heavy crates, boxes, and similar items.
Maintain dining-room cleanliness as assigned.
Help set up facilities for meetings, classrooms, and events.
Perform school-plant maintenance and lawn and shrub care using appropriate equipment and tools.
Perform other duties as assigned.
