About The Position

Under the direction of the Head of School and Facilities Manager, the Custodian is responsible for providing a variety of janitorial services for St. Joseph Academy. This role supports the Church’s and Schools spiritual and pastoral mission by maintaining a clean and orderly school facility. The Custodian performs general custodial duties, light maintenance, and assists with groundskeeping as needed. Responsibilities include scheduled deep cleaning tasks such as floor waxing, painting, window washing, and carpet cleaning. The position also involves setting up and cleaning facilities for events, maintaining cleaning supplies and equipment, ensuring building security, and complying with safety regulations. The Custodian must be able to read directions and safety warnings, possess a thorough knowledge of custodial tools and equipment, and pass a criminal background check and complete the Protecting God’s Children workshop.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent education
  • Two (2) years’ experience in a commercial or private maintenance, custodial, or similar position
  • Must have a working knowledge of and a strong commitment to the mission of the Diocese and Catholic Church
  • Excellent communications skills, verbal and written; excellent human relations and interpersonal skills
  • Exercise courtesy to fellow employees, students, and the general public
  • Must be a self-starter; well organized; perform multiple tasks simultaneously and work with a sense of urgency
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment; punctuality is a must at all times
  • Ability to travel locally as required
  • Be able to read directions and label safety warnings. Must be safety-conscious
  • A thorough knowledge of the use of the tools and equipment associated with custodial work and general maintenance.
  • Must successfully pass the required criminal background check prior to employment and every five years; must complete Protecting God’s Children (PGC) workshop prior to employment.
  • Possess a valid Florida driver’s license
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, vendors, employees, and the general public.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Responsibilities

  • Follows a cleaning schedule to assure the school is clean and maintained in an orderly fashion
  • Performs general custodial duties to include cleaning and light maintenance of the school facilities.
  • Assists grounds keeper on an “as needed” basis to keep and maintain the yard appearance
  • Performs scheduled monthly, semi-annual, or annual janitorial duties, i.e., floor waxing, painting, window washing, carpet cleaning, etc. as directed and in accordance with the schools custodial and maintenance schedule
  • Provides set-up and cleaning of facilities for all activities and events as directed
  • Cleans equipment, including kitchen, restrooms and other facilities; recommends and request replacement of equipment and notifies maintenance of issues as necessary
  • Maintains a supply of cleaning supplies and equipment in all maintenance closets; properly account for materials and equipment
  • Maintains security of buildings, equipment, and tools
  • Complies with safety regulations as required; maintain a safe working environment
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
