About The Position

The Custodian provides students, staff, and visitors with a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, and efficient place to learn, play, and develop. The role maintains school buildings and grounds, performs routine cleaning and upkeep, secures the building at the end of the school day, and supports building activities as directed. The employee may also be required to remain on school premises when authorized building use requires their attendance.

The position involves extensive standing, walking, lifting, bending, reaching, and handling tools and equipment. Duties may include lifting or distributing materials weighing up to 100 pounds, moving heavier materials with appropriate equipment, and working with ladders, scaffolding, mechanical lifts, and District vehicles. Salary and work year are determined by the union contract. Eligible employees may receive a comprehensive benefits package under applicable collective bargaining agreements, Board of Education policies, and/or employment terms.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Demonstrated aptitude or competence for assigned responsibilities.
• Must be able to stand, walk, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls, and talk or hear as required by the job.
• Must be able to frequently reach overhead and forward, squat, stoop, kneel, bend, and twist at the neck and waist.
• Must be able to grasp tools, climb ladders and stepladders, and spend most of the workday standing, lifting, and walking.
• Must be able to frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds, including cleaning supplies, pails, salt, furniture, deliveries, and school materials; must be able to lift up to 60 pounds and move heavier materials with appropriate equipment.
• Must be able to push or pull items such as tables, bleachers, and scrubbing machines.
• Must be able to use ladders, scaffolding, mechanical lifts, and District vehicles.
• Must properly use safety equipment to prevent injury to self or others.
• Must have close, color, peripheral, and depth vision and the ability to adjust focus.
• Other alternatives to the listed qualifications may be accepted as determined appropriate and necessary by the board.

Responsibilities

• Keep the building and premises, including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas, neat and clean.
• Shovel, plow, and sand walks, driveways, parking areas, and steps as appropriate.
• Clean classrooms daily and dust as needed.
• Clean corridors daily and as needed throughout the day.
• Scrub, hose down, and disinfect toilets and floors daily; clean sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains daily.
• Wash windows inside and outside at least twice each year and more often as necessary.
• Perform yard-keeping chores, such as grass cutting and tree trimming, to maintain safe and attractive school grounds.
• Keep floors clean, attractive, and in good condition.
• Immediately report damage to school property to the building administrator and facilities supervisor.
• Remain on school premises during school hours and at other authorized building-use times when attendance is required by the building administrator or facilities supervisor.
• Close the building each school day and check that doors and windows are secured, lights are turned off except for safety reasons, and the alarm is on.
• Move furniture or equipment within buildings as required for activities and as directed by the building administrator or facilities supervisor.
• Comply with local, state, and federal laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish, and waste.
• Perform other related work as required by the Head Custodian, Building Administrator, Facilities Director, and/or Supervisor.
