About The Position

The Custodian performs routine work to maintain the cleanliness of an assigned facility and its grounds. Under the supervision of an administrator or manager, the employee receives general direction and leadership from a day or night custodial supervisor. The role performs cleaning and maintenance functions on the day or evening shift. Work is evaluated by observation while in progress and inspection of completed assignments. Duties include inspecting buildings for security, cleaning interiors and maintaining grounds, and moving and storing furniture and equipment. The work may involve extensive walking, stooping, pushing, carrying, climbing, bending, and lifting. The employee is also responsible for using safety devices and safe practices, and for correcting or reporting hazardous conditions in the building or grounds.

Requirements

Working knowledge of cleaning materials and equipment.
Knowledge of English sufficient to understand operating instructions for cleaning equipment and materials, as well as safety and accident-prevention information.
Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally.
Ability to hear normally spoken words at 25 feet.
Ability to work outdoors under adverse weather conditions.
Ability to climb ladders and stairs.
Ability to pick up and carry 65 pounds.
Ability to operate cleaning machines and willingness to learn to operate cleaning and grass-cutting machines.
Ability to stand for prolonged periods.
Ability to attend and participate willingly in training sessions.
Ability to learn and practice acceptable cleaning methods and to work as a self-starter.

Responsibilities

Inspect buildings to ensure building security.
Clean buildings through tasks such as sweeping, dusting, mopping, scrubbing, sealing, buffing, vacuuming, and washing rooms and surfaces.
Maintain grounds by mowing, watering, sweeping, weeding, picking up lawn debris, and cleaning sidewalks.
Move and store furniture and equipment.
Perform general building maintenance, including cleaning bathrooms, windows, walls, furniture, drinking fountains, trash cans, equipment, and other areas; filling dispensers; and assisting in the cafeteria.
Perform floor maintenance, including picking up trash, removing gum, vacuuming, sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, waxing, and buffing.
Operate cleaning equipment and acquire skills in operating cleaning and grass-cutting machines used at the assigned facility.
Open and secure the building.
Use safety devices, protective equipment, and safe practices when performing work.
Correct hazardous conditions within the building or grounds when possible and report them to the appropriate administrator.
Interact positively with students, administrators, co-workers, parents, and the community.
Attend and participate in training sessions and perform other duties as assigned.
