The Custodian maintains general office and common areas, including private offices, lobbies, lounges, kitchens and break rooms, coffee areas, washrooms, restrooms, stairways, corridors, computer rooms, conference rooms, and mailrooms. Work in security-access areas is excluded unless pre-approved. At schools, serviced areas include hallways and classrooms. Duties include sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and spot-cleaning floors; cleaning and sanitizing restrooms and drinking fountains; emptying waste receptacles and replacing liners; replenishing towels, tissue, soap, and feminine products; dusting furniture and other specified surfaces; and cleaning glass, entrance doors, signs, kitchen and coffee areas, and break-room furnishings and appliances. Items such as letter files, telephones, and personal belongings are not moved or dusted; cleaning is done around them. Dishwashing is available at extra charge and is limited to dishes employees have returned to the break area. The custodian uses minimal lighting while working, turns lights off after nightly service, keeps janitorial closets orderly, and checks locks and sets alarms where necessary before leaving to help ensure the building is secure. The role requires a neat, clean appearance, punctuality, wearing identification while on duty, professional conduct, compliance with organizational policies, participation in quality-improvement activities, and attendance at staff meetings and trainings.
