About The Position

Under general supervision of the Lead Custodian, the Custodian/Maintenance Technician performs custodial and cleaning duties at Neighborhood House Association Head Start sites and administrative offices, prepares rooms and facilities for meetings, and performs related duties as assigned. The position may involve working at different sites and assisting other maintenance personnel. Employment and salaries for some positions at Neighborhood House Association may depend on continued receipt of State, Federal, or grant funding. The position requires knowledge of cleaning methods, safe handling and dilution of cleaning products, custodial tools and equipment, and relevant safety practices. A typical qualification is a high school diploma or GED and one year of custodial experience. Pediatric First Aid and CPR certification must be obtained within 90 days of employment. Employees must meet and maintain State and County childcare-center employment requirements, including fingerprinting, TB screening, physical examination, and immunizations. The work involves frequent standing, walking, climbing, balancing, and bending or kneeling, with frequent lifting or moving of up to 50 pounds and occasional lifting or moving of up to 100 pounds. The employee regularly works in an office environment that is typically quiet.

Requirements

High school graduation or GED equivalent.
One year of custodial experience.
Knowledge of proper cleaning methods and safe use of cleaning materials, disinfectants, janitorial tools, and equipment.
Knowledge of the use and minor maintenance of hand and power tools and equipment used in custodial work.
Knowledge of safety practices, safety equipment, and safe work methods and regulations related to the work.
Knowledge of proper mixing and dilution of cleansers, disinfectants, and stripping agents.
Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
Ability to safely operate automobiles and small vans.
Ability to complete assignments independently without immediate supervision.
Ability to be flexible with work schedule and assigned sites.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with people encountered during the work.
Obtain Pediatric First Aid and CPR certification within 90 days of employment.
Meet and maintain State law and County licensing requirements for employment in a childcare center, including fingerprints, TB screening, physical examination, and immunizations.
Regularly use hands to handle or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms; frequently stand, talk or hear, walk, sit, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
Frequently lift or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 100 pounds.
Use written and oral communication; read and interpret data, information, and documents; analyze and solve problems; use simple arithmetic; observe and interpret situations; learn and apply information or skills; work under deadlines and interruptions; and interact with staff, the public, and other organizations.

Responsibilities

Sweep, mop, scrub, polish, and strip, seal, or buff floors; sweep and vacuum rugs and spot-clean carpets.
Dust and polish furniture and woodwork; wash doors, windows, walls, ceilings, and furniture; polish metalwork.
Empty, clean, and line waste receptacles and dispose of trash.
Clean kitchen appliances, including microwave ovens, stoves, coffee pots, and refrigerators.
Clean and disinfect restrooms and restock restroom supplies as needed.
Report maintenance and repair needs, and assist other maintenance personnel with buildings and fixtures as needed.
Close windows, turn off lights, and lock doors to secure buildings.
Maintain equipment and materials in proper condition and keep basic records of work performed and time sheets.
Follow safe work practices, maintain safe storage areas, correct or report safety and fire hazards, and follow product-label instructions for mixing and diluting cleaning agents.
Use custodial tools, equipment, and supplies; clean lighting fixtures and replace light bulbs and fluorescent tubes.
Set up conference rooms for meetings, including sound systems, VCRs, and CCTV systems.
Operate vehicles to deliver supplies and materials between NHA sites.
Move office furniture and equipment and make minor repairs as needed.
Work at different assigned sites as a floater when needed.
Perform other duties as assigned.
