About The Position

The Syracuse City School District is seeking a Custodian III to oversee cleaning and maintenance operations in one or more school buildings. This is a rolling posting for ongoing recruitment. The role involves administrative work with potential participation in difficult maintenance functions, under the general supervision of an administrative superior. The position supervises a substantial number of subordinate custodial employees and involves 24-hour responsibility.

Requirements

  • Two (2) years of permanent competitive class status as a Custodian II (for promotion).
  • Four (4) years of custodial work experience, or its part-time equivalent, involving semi-skilled maintenance in a school district, teaching facility, college, or other educational facility (for open competitive).
  • At least one (1) year of supervisory experience over custodial staff.
  • Thorough knowledge of the methods and equipment common to the cleaning and maintenance of public school buildings.
  • Good knowledge of the operation and minor maintenance of heating and ventilation equipment.
  • Good knowledge of the basic principles involved in making semi-skilled plumbing, electrical, painting, plastering, and carpentry repairs.
  • Good knowledge of the techniques and methods of supervision involving planning, scheduling, and assigning work.
  • Ability to plan, assign, and supervise the work of subordinates.
  • Ability to interact and work well with building occupants and others.
  • Must meet minimum qualifications on the Onondaga County Civil Service job description.
  • Must pass a fingerprint-based background check.

Responsibilities

  • Assign, supervise, and review the work of subordinate custodial personnel engaged in cleaning, maintenance, and minor repair of school buildings.
  • Schedule the work of subordinates to meet cleaning and maintenance needs without disrupting school operations.
  • Inspect buildings, grounds, and equipment for safety and cleanliness.
  • Perform routine inspections on district assets and prepare required reports.
  • Report necessary major repairs to an administrative superior or principal.
  • Select and requisition essential cleaning supplies, check inventory, and maintain proper supply levels.
  • Conduct training for custodial personnel in effective cleaning and maintenance procedures.
  • Participate in the work of subordinates as necessary.
  • Prepare and submit payrolls and budget estimates.
  • Arrange for special uses of the building.
  • Maintain or supervise the maintenance of fan and ventilation systems, sump pumps, emergency generators, and hot water heaters.
  • Maintain or supervise the maintenance of boilers, air compressors, and air conditioning.
  • Be responsible for scheduling and ensuring custodial shifts and operations are covered during absences.
