About The Position

The Custodian I works under immediate supervision to provide cleaning, bed linen change-out, floor care, moving, grounds, and project services as directed by a supervisor. The role may include interior and exterior medical housekeeping duties to maintain a clean and aseptic environment throughout the hospital and clinics. Assignments may include patient-area cleaner, non-patient-area cleaner, trash technician, special-care-unit cleaner, or other custodial positions.

Requirements

Less than one year of work experience required.
Knowledge of the tools and equipment needed for the job.
Knowledge of safety hazards and necessary precautions sufficient to help establish a safe work environment.
Knowledge of cleaning chemicals and equipment sufficient to maintain a clean and orderly work area.
Knowledge of proper cleaning methods.
Knowledge of, or ability to learn about, occasional hazards and safety precautions.
Ability to understand and follow oral, illustrated, written, or demonstrated instructions.
Ability to communicate effectively.
Ability to work within Health Department standards.

Nice To Haves

Command of English is strongly preferred.
Formal or informal education or training that supports reading and writing at the level necessary for successful job performance.

Responsibilities

Sweep, mop, scrub, or vacuum building floors, following procedures for chemical cleaners and equipment to prevent damage to finishes and fixtures.
Change bed linens.
Gather and empty trash and linen.
Transport and appropriately handle trash, recycling, medical waste, linen, and other items to designated areas, and maintain waste areas in accordance with regulatory standards.
Use floor-care equipment to strip, seal, finish, and polish floors, and clean carpet and upholstery.
Clean windows, glass partitions, and mirrors using appropriate cleaners and tools.
Mix water and detergents or acids in containers to prepare cleaning solutions according to specifications.
