About The Position

This full-time, 12-month position is based at North High and works evenings, Monday through Friday, from 4:00 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. The Custodian performs routine cleaning and housekeeping to maintain safe, clean facilities for children and MPS staff. Work areas include classrooms, conference rooms, lecture and study halls, cafeterias, libraries, gymnasiums, locker rooms, restrooms, offices, athletic areas, hallways, common areas, and outdoor building areas. The role also includes operating mechanical cleaning equipment, replacing lamps, removing outdoor trash, watering turf, sweeping sidewalks, and supporting snow removal operations. An additional stipend of $0.29 per hour is added to the hourly rate. The position requires moderate physical strength, the ability to follow oral and written instructions, and acceptable working relationships with coworkers, staff, students, supervisors, and the public. Employees must complete required training, use products and equipment properly, work from ladders and scaffolding, perform duties with minimum supervision, maintain a neat appearance, wear provided uniforms, and use appropriate PPE. Occasional overtime may be required.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.
Basic knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment.
Ability to perform manual tasks requiring moderate physical strength.
Ability to operate mechanical cleaning equipment.
Ability to follow simple oral and written instructions.
Ability to establish and maintain amiable working relationships with supervisors, staff, students, the general public, and fellow workers.
Ability to work overtime on occasion.
Ability to complete required training and demonstrate proper use of products and equipment.
Ability to work from a ladder and scaffolding.
Ability to perform assigned duties with minimum supervision.
Must maintain a clean and neat appearance, wear provided uniforms, and use proper PPE.
Physical demands include standing, walking, sitting, lifting up to 60 pounds, carrying, pushing or pulling up to 70 pounds of force, climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, handling, speaking, hearing, and visual tasks.

Nice To Haves

Experience as a primary or secondary school custodian.

Responsibilities

Perform floor care, including dust mopping, wet mopping, vacuuming, sweeping, scrubbing, stripping, neutralizing, waxing, spot cleaning, stain and gum removal, and shampooing floors.
Pick up and empty trash; change waste bags; provide services for the lunch program; and clean and dust restrooms, classrooms, boards, erasers, pencil sharpeners, walls, ceilings, light fixtures, glass, blinds, and draperies.
Clean and polish furniture and replenish restrooms with paper products, soap, and other supplies.
Replace defective lightbulbs, clean mechanical grills, dust horizontal and vertical surfaces, and keep ceiling tiles in place.
Provide services for special activities and identify and report items requiring repair.
Coordinate with supervisors, lead staff, and coworkers and provide feedback about building maintenance needs.
Remove trash from grounds and playgrounds, water turf, sweep sidewalks, and perform snow removal operations.
Operate, clean, and care for assigned equipment and supplies.
