Custodial Worker 1 - Minimum Qualifications Waived
About The Position
This position is located within the State Public Works Division, Buildings & Grounds Section, in Carson City. This position is responsible for repairing and servicing custodial equipment such as vacuum cleaners; removing snow from walkways, driveways, or parking lots; and reporting any security deficiencies. The incumbent may be designated as a lead worker for assigning tasks and will maintain inventory levels for equipment and supplies, including completing required inventory logs and forms as needed. Custodial Workers perform general cleaning services to State facilities using various cleaning equipment and materials to provide a safe, hygienic and orderly work environment for all users.
Requirements
- Graduation from high school or equivalent education and six months of custodial or janitorial experience in a commercial, industrial, hospital, governmental or similar environment; OR six months of general work experience and six months of custodial or janitorial experience in a commercial industrial, hospital, governmental or similar environment; OR six months of experience as a Custodial Worker Trainee in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- General knowledge of basic mathematics sufficient to keep records of supplies needed.
- General knowledge of custodial procedures and practices.
- Ability to read labels and directions on cleaning agents and equipment.
- Ability to complete forms and prepare routine reports.
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
- Ability to perform physical labor requiring moderate physical strength.
- Ability to perform custodial tasks including mopping, sweeping, vacuuming, washing windows, and cleaning restrooms.
Responsibilities

- Cleaning and/or sanitizing offices, restrooms, showers, bathtubs, laundry rooms, classrooms and other facilities or assigned areas according to prescribed schedules, methods and procedures.
- Dusting, mopping and applying finish to various types of floors.
- Vacuuming and shampooing various types of carpets.
- Washing windows, doors, mirrors, walls, woodwork and fixtures.
- Cleaning and sanitizing restrooms.
- Polishing furniture.
- Cleaning stairwells and elevators.
- Emptying waste receptacles.
- Operating various types of powered equipment such as electric strippers, buffers, burnishers, power washers and vacuums.
- Utilizing a wide range of cleaning agents and materials.
- Observing appropriate safety precautions in the handling and application of products and materials.
- Attending in-service and training sessions as required.
- Providing security to State buildings by ensuring that windows, doors and/or access ways are properly secured when and where appropriate.
- Locking doors, windows and gates.
- Arming security systems.
- Replacing light bulbs, fluorescent tubes, vacuum belts and bags.
- Reporting broken and malfunctioning equipment to supervisor and requesting cleaning supplies as needed.
- Moving and helping to transport furniture to different locations.
- Setting up rooms in a timely manner for meetings and special events.
- Maintaining required logs of work completed, inventory and supplies used.
- Completing required forms and preparing routine reports as needed.
- Performing related duties as required.
- Performing the full range of duties described in the series concept under supervision.
