About The Position

The Custodial & Maintenance Associate is responsible for maintaining an attractive, clean, safe, and well-functioning environment throughout Habitat’s properties. This position plays a meaningful behind-the-scenes role in keeping affiliate operations running smoothly by ensuring that staff, volunteers, and visitors are welcomed into a tidy and professional workspace. The position combines routine custodial duties with light building and grounds maintenance, including repairs, painting, furniture moves, and basic exterior upkeep. This is an hourly, part-time position. Work is performed primarily at Habitat’s headquarters located in Petoskey and occasionally in locations where Habitat is building. Work may also be performed on an as-needed basis at satellite offices. Scheduling is flexible during the hours of 8:30-4:30 for an estimated 15 hours per week. Additional hours may be available based on the organization’s needs.

Requirements

  • Basic working knowledge of common hand tools and the ability to perform simple repairs such as tightening hardware, patching small holes, and basic painting.
  • Ability to follow established cleaning checklists and maintenance routines while also identifying and addressing tasks proactively.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to maintain a consistent standard of cleanliness and order.
  • Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and complete assigned tasks within scheduled hours.
  • Ability to communicate respectfully and professionally with staff, volunteers, and visitors.
  • Commitment to understanding and supporting the broader mission of Habitat for Humanity.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required.
  • Must pass a Criminal Background Check (convictions will be reviewed based on the seriousness of the crime; a conviction does not necessarily mean disqualification).
  • Must pass a Sexual Offender Registry Check. Being listed will result in automatic disqualification from employment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform regular cleaning of office spaces, including dusting, vacuuming, sweeping, mopping, and trash removal.
  • Clean and sanitize restrooms, breakrooms, kitchen areas, and shared spaces, including restocking paper products, soap, and other supplies.
  • Wipe down and disinfect high-touch surfaces such as door handles, light switches, countertops, and shared equipment.
  • Clean interior and exterior windows, glass doors, and reception areas to maintain a professional appearance.
  • Monitor cleaning supply inventory and notify the Administrative Support Manager when items need to be reordered.
  • Proper handling of recycling, returnables, and garbage.
  • Perform minor repairs throughout the office, such as tightening loose fixtures, replacing light bulbs, fixing minor drywall blemishes, and addressing small wear-and-tear issues as they arise.
  • Complete interior painting and touch-up work as needed to keep office spaces looking fresh and well-maintained.
  • Move, assemble, or rearrange furniture and office equipment to support evolving workspace needs and special projects.
  • Assist with periodic office reconfigurations, including relocating desks, chairs, files, and supplies between rooms.
  • Identify and report maintenance issues that require professional or contracted services beyond the scope of this role.
  • Clear sidewalks, entryways, and walkways of snow, ice, and debris during the winter months to ensure safe access to the building.
  • Pick up trash and blow debris from the parking lot and surrounding exterior areas to maintain a clean and welcoming property.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and tidiness of the deck, including sweeping, removing debris, and addressing minor upkeep needs.
  • Seasonal building and window power washing based on organizational needs.
  • Lawn maintenance and mowing based on organizational need.
  • Coordinate with the supervisor to prioritize routine cleaning tasks alongside maintenance and project-based work.
  • Properly use, store, and care for cleaning supplies, tools, and equipment in accordance with safety guidelines.
  • Maintain safety documents for cleaning products.
  • Follow all safety procedures, including proper handling of cleaning chemicals, use of personal protective equipment, and safe lifting techniques.
