About The Position

The Lansing School District is seeking a Career and Technical Education (CTE) Cosmetology Instructor to deliver high-quality, industry-aligned instruction that prepares students for careers in cosmetology and related personal care services. This role is ideal for someone who is passionate about developing future cosmetology professionals through hands-on learning, real-world salon experiences, and strong industry connections. The Lansing School District serves over 10,000 PreK–12 students across 25 school buildings in the diverse and vibrant community of Lansing, Michigan, offering a wide range of innovative educational opportunities.

Requirements

  • Valid MDE Career and Technical Education (CTE) teaching certificate in CIP Code 12.0400 (Cosmetology), or eligibility to obtain an Annual Career Authorization (ACA) with a minimum of 4,000 hours of recent, relevant industry experience within the past five (5) years
  • Current State of Michigan Cosmetology License and Cosmetology Instructor License (must be valid, up to date, and on file with the SOM)
  • Strong knowledge of cosmetology practices, including hair, skin, nails, sanitation, and safety procedures

Responsibilities

  • Deliver instruction aligned to state-approved standards for CIP Code 12.0400
  • Design and implement engaging, hands-on lessons in a lab/salon setting that reflect real-world cosmetology practices
  • Teach technical skills including hair cutting, styling, chemical services, skincare, nail care, and sanitation protocols
  • Prepare students for state licensure exams and industry expectations
  • Create a structured, inclusive, and safety-focused learning environment
  • Use data and assessments to monitor student progress and guide instruction
  • Maintain accurate records including attendance, grading, hours tracking, and program documentation
  • Facilitate work-based learning experiences, including internships, clinical hours, and job shadows
  • Build partnerships with local salons, spas, and industry professionals
  • Coordinate guest speakers, demonstrations, and career exploration opportunities
  • Organize and lead at least two advisory committee meetings annually
  • Collaborate with colleagues through Professional Learning Communities (PLCs)
  • Engage in ongoing professional development and maintain industry relevance
  • Complete required CIP self-review and state reporting
  • Perform additional duties aligned to district goals
