Intern - Cryogenics Engineer - Spring 2027

Commonwealth Fusion Systems•Devens, MA
•$23 - $35•Onsite

About The Position

Commonwealth Fusion Systems is seeking a Cryogenics Engineering Intern to join its Cryogenics team for a 26-week internship in Spring 2027. The team develops cryogenic helium systems that keep high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnets at superconducting temperatures. The intern will contribute to engineering design and analysis in a fast-paced, collaborative environment, taking designs from concept to hardware. Project assignments and required technical skills will vary with the team’s needs. The opportunity is in Devens, Massachusetts. Interns working onsite are responsible for their own transportation and housing. The internship is 40–50 hours per week, with an hourly rate based on year in school. Applicants must be currently enrolled college students and authorized to work in the United States for any employer. Students from bachelor’s through PhD level may apply. The position involves developing process engineering documents, thermohydraulic analyses and models, project tracking tools, and presentations, as well as hands-on building and testing. Interns may encounter industrial hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead, high voltage, and cryogenics, and must be dedicated to safety. The position may occasionally require travel, nights, weekends, or on-call work.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in college; applicants at bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD level may apply.
  • Authorized to work in the United States for any employer.
  • Willingness to travel or work required nights, weekends, or on-call occasionally.
  • Ability to perform activities such as typing, standing, or sitting for extended periods.
  • Dedication to safety when working around industrial hazards that may include heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, and cryogenics.

Nice To Haves

  • Preferred majors include Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical or Software Engineering, and Computer Science.
  • Enthusiasm for learning company processes for design and engineering and collaborating in a group setting.
  • Exposure to fluid dynamics and thermodynamics.
  • Exposure to programmable logic controllers and electrical schematics.
  • Exposure to CAD software.
  • Exposure to FEA and/or CFD software.
  • Interest in entrepreneurship.

Responsibilities

  • Read, develop, and revise process engineering documents, including process flow diagrams (PFDs), piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), test plans, test procedures, process controls, and human-machine interfaces (HMIs).
  • Develop thermohydraulics analysis calculations, tools, models, and reports, including Excel calculations, one-dimensional thermohydraulic models such as EcoSim, and computational fluid dynamics models such as COMSOL.
  • Build physical and digital tools to manage and report project milestones, and present results and learnings to stakeholders, including managing small project budgets.
  • Participate in hands-on building and testing, which may include flow instrumentation panels, vacuum carts and headers, compression tubing setups, helium leak test configurations, oil removal bakeouts, and helium purity measurement and calibration.

Benefits

  • 40 hours of sick time.
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • 401(k) with employer matching; enrollment requires being at least 21 years old.
  • Professional growth opportunities.
