About The Position

This CUPE 841.4 position, under the direct supervision of the Administrative Assistant, assists students and pedestrians (as defined by the Highway Traffic Act, HTA) safely across designated busy streets, crossing at designated time periods, Monday to Friday at designated time periods during the school year. The spare crossing guard position will be required to work at multiple crossing guard locations throughout the City and will be required to have their own transportation to and from those locations.

Requirements

  • Stand outside for approx. 45 – 60 minutes; 3 times per day in inclement weather
  • Extend one arm out and parallel to shoulder holding STOP sign (approx. 2.5 lbs) for up to one minute
  • Carry/move pylons (10-20 lbs) out to the middle of the road at start of shift and back at end of shift
  • Cross road quickly (not required to run)
  • Move out of way quickly, if required
  • See oncoming traffic at approximately 300 feet away
  • Hear oncoming traffic
  • Have the ability to communicate effectively
  • Must obtain and provide a satisfactory vulnerable sector police record check.
  • Must obtain and provide a satisfactory medical evaluation.
  • Must be willing to work in outside work conditions that include inclement weather (i.e. heat, cold, rain, snow, humidity and exposure to dust and hazards associated with high traffic conditions).
  • Must have own transportation.

Responsibilities

  • Direct or escort students and pedestrians across the street, at their crosswalk, stopping traffic as necessary.
  • Maintain focus and avoid disruptions while escorting students and pedestrians across the street.
  • Communicate traffic and crossing rules and other information to students and pedestrians.
  • Review the intersection on a daily basis and report any unsafe behaviour of students and/or conditions to the Administrative Assistant / Office Co-ordinator.
  • Work from a location where you can see and be seen by all traffic.
  • Monitor traffic flow to locate gaps through which students and pedestrians safely cross streets.
  • Be aware of emergency vehicles approaching the area, ensuring that the emergency vehicles have priority over student and pedestrian traffic.
  • Use appropriate Highway Traffic Act traffic control signage (STOP paddle) in the approved manner.
  • Work in compliance with the provisions of the Act, the regulations and City policies.
  • Use or wear the equipment, protective devices or clothing that the City requires to be used or worn.
  • Report to his or her supervisor the absence of or defect in any equipment or protective device of which the worker is aware and which may endanger himself, herself or another worker.
  • Report to his or her supervisor any contravention of the Act, the regulations or the existence of any hazard of which he or she knows.
  • Remove or make ineffective any protective device required by regulations or by the City, without providing an adequate temporary protective device and when the need for removing or making ineffective the protective device has ceased, the protective device shall be replaced immediately.
  • Use or operate any equipment, machine, device or thing or work in a manner that may endanger himself, herself or any other worker.
  • Engage in any prank, contest, feat of strength, unnecessary running or rough and boisterous conduct.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned.
