About The Position

The City of Santa Clarita is currently recruiting dedicated individuals to join our team with the City’s Community Services division as a part-time, temporary, seasonal (PTS) Crossing Guard or substitute Crossing Guard. This position provides an opportunity to serve your community by helping our children get to school safely. Under the supervision of the City of Santa Clarita Recreation Supervisor and Recreation Coordinators, the Crossing Guard is responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient crossing of schoolchildren and other pedestrians within the immediate vicinity of designated school crosswalks and school zones. Crossing Guards are employees of the City of Santa Clarita and not the school district.

Requirements

  • Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather
  • Ability to follow proper safety protocol and pay strict attention to safety at all times
  • Strong customer service skills with the ability to effectively respond to general questions and issues in a professional and timely manner
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to analyze problems, identify solutions, and make sound decisions
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to communicate verbal information clearly
  • Strong work ethic and the ability to handle difficult situations with professionalism and good judgment
  • Ability to provide appropriate knowledge of traffic laws and use clear and proper traffic management signals
  • Ability to work effectively, compassionately, and positively with youth, adults, and staff
  • Ability to report to assignment consistently
  • Ability to control a STOP paddle effectively to provide approaching road users with a clear, fully direct view of the paddle’s STOP message during the entire crossing movement
  • Ability to meet physical requirements, including audio, visual, and mobility aspects
  • Ability to lift, drag, and push files, paper, and equipment up to 25 pounds may be required

Responsibilities

  • Works outdoors and provides overall safety of school-age children in the assigned area by assisting pedestrians with street crossing
  • Assists school children and other pedestrians in crossing busy intersections by halting vehicles through the use of mechanical signals and/or hand-held stop signs
  • Maintains order and safety practices among children waiting to cross the street at street crossing points; permits street crossing only when safe to do so
  • Observes and communicates conditions in traffic that may pose a potential safety hazard to the Crossing Guard office and/or the crossing guard lead
  • Provides excellent customer service while ensuring the overall safety of school-age children in the assigned area
  • Encourages pedestrians to cross distraction-free, including advising against the use of electronic devices such as texting, talking on the phone, or wearing headphones while crossing
  • Maintains flexibility to work a split-shift schedule
  • Adheres to program policies, procedures, and safe work practices
  • Attends meetings and training sessions
  • Other duties, as directed by the Recreation Supervisor and Recreation Coordinator
