About The Position

The City of Santa Clarita is currently recruiting a dedicated individual to join our team with the City’s Community Services division as a part-time, temporary seasonal (PTS) Crossing Guard Lead. This position will be responsible for providing guidance and coaching to crossing guards who aid with the efficient crossing of the street by schoolchildren and other pedestrian traffic within the immediate vicinity of school crosswalks/zones. This position will work under the supervision of the City of Santa Clarita Recreation Supervisor and Recreation Coordinators and is not an employee of the school district. This position requires the flexibility to work Monday – Friday between the hours of 7:15 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. in two different shifts, for approximately 20 hours per week, plus additional hours for meetings and trainings.

Requirements

  • At least six months of paid experience as a Crossing Guard
  • Possession of a valid Class C California driver license and a safe driving record

Responsibilities

  • Works outdoors and provides overall safety of school-age children in the designated area by assisting pedestrians with street crossing
  • Assists school children and other pedestrians in crossing busy intersections by halting vehicles through the use of mechanical signals and/or hand-held stop signs in the Crossing Guard's absence
  • Observes and communicates conditions in traffic that may pose a potential safety hazard to the Crossing Guard office
  • Provides excellent customer service while ensuring the overall safety of school-age children in the assigned area
  • Acts as a liaison between the Recreation Coordinators and Crossing Guards
  • Provides guidance to Crossing Guards at their designated sites
  • Assists with on-site training of new crossing guards
  • Maintains a calendar of Crossing Guards’ schedules and work locations, including shift start and end times and total work hours per location
  • Collects paperwork and distributes materials when necessary
  • Maintains various forms, logs, and reports; tracks inventory and organizes supplies, submits requests for necessary equipment and supplies, and distributes supplies to Crossing Guards
  • Visits crosswalk locations daily to ensure there is coverage for every shift
  • Collects and records vehicle and pedestrian data as needed
  • Effectively addresses issues and concerns as they arise
  • Reports incidents and accidents to Recreation Coordinators
  • Communicates work-related concerns to Crossing Guards and Recreation Coordinators
  • Attends meetings with the Recreation Coordinators and other lead guards regularly
  • Maintains flexibility to work a split-shift schedule
  • Adheres to program policies, procedures, and safe work practices
  • Other duties, as directed by the Recreation Supervisor and Recreation Coordinator
