About The Position

The Mundelein Police Department is looking for a reliable individual to serve as a School Crossing Guard. This position requires morning and afternoon hours, and all necessary equipment and training will be provided. The role involves directing and controlling children at designated crossings, ensuring their safety, and communicating with motorists. The crossing guard will also observe and report any safety concerns or incidents to the on-duty watch commander.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • May be required to attend and complete safety courses and other trainings as mandated by the Chief of Police.
  • Ability to carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Knowledge of traffic safety rules and regulations pertaining to children and the public.
  • Demonstrated reliability, punctuality, and dependability in fulfilling assigned responsibilities.
  • Ability to relate to and supervise children.
  • Ability to interact tactfully and courteously with school district officials and the public.
  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods and repeatedly use hand signals to direct motorists and school children.
  • Ability to work outdoors and withstand a variety of fluctuating weather conditions throughout the year, including heat, cold, rain, snow, and other seasonal conditions.
  • Ability to distinguish colors, hear and interpret sounds, and work effectively in varying light conditions.
  • Ability to remain alert and attentive and work independently with little or no direct supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Direct and control children at designated crossings, crossing in groups, and utilizing traffic signals and gaps in traffic where no signals exists.
  • Prevent children from committing unsafe and unlawful acts ensuring a pattern of safe behavior of children when crossing streets.
  • Inform motorists, through prescribed signals, that children are using the crosswalk and have the right to proceed.
  • Observe and report incidents and conditions detrimental to the safety of pedestrians or motorists to the on-duty watch commander. This includes but is not limited to, violations of traffic laws and disciplinary problems involving children who regularly use the particular crossing.
  • Minor student problems should be adjudicated through the appropriate school officials.
  • Train and instruct new crossing guards for relief purposes when required.
