Critical Lift & Move Engineer, Experienced or Senior

Boeing•USA - Kennedy Space Center, FL, FL
•$103,700 - $171,350•Onsite

About The Position

The Boeing Company’s Boeing Defense & Space organization is seeking Experienced or Senior Critical Lift and Move Production Engineers for the NASA Artemis Space Launch System (SLS) team at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The position is expected to be 100% onsite and supports Core Stage hardware across production sites at Kennedy Space Center, Florida, and Michoud Assembly Facility, Louisiana. As a lead or member of the Critical Lift & Move team, the engineer plans, oversees, and supports execution of critical lift and move operations. The role develops hardware lift strategies and engineered execution plans, supports safe handling and transportation of program-critical hardware, and participates in flight hardware and tooling design reviews. Work includes supporting cranes, self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs), aerial lifts, and other specialized handling equipment. Off-shift, weekend, or time-sensitive support may be required based on program needs. The position requires a U.S. Person under the stated export-control requirements and the ability to obtain access clearance for a NASA facility. The posting separately states that the position does not require a security clearance. Candidates must also satisfy Boeing’s Conflict of Interest assessment process. The role is NASA safety-sensitive and subject to random drug and alcohol testing.

  • Experience in mechanical, structural, manufacturing, production, or operations engineering.
  • Experience supporting crane lifts, rigging, heavy transport, or large structural handling operations.
  • Must meet U.S. export-control requirements as a U.S. Person.
  • Ability to obtain a clearance for access to a NASA facility.
  • Must satisfy the Company’s Conflict of Interest assessment process.
  • Strong verbal and written communication, attention to detail, commitment to safety, and ability to work effectively on a multidisciplinary team.

Nice To Haves

  • Certifications in crane, rigging, ironworking, and heavy equipment operations.
  • Experience in rigging.
  • Experience developing engineering plans, procedures, work instructions, or technical documentation.
  • Knowledge of lifting and rigging fundamentals, load paths, center of gravity evaluation, and structural response during lifting and transportation.
  • Familiarity with OSHA and ASME B30 standards and regulations.
  • Experience with CAD models, engineering drawings, and engineering analysis tools used to assess hardware interfaces and structural capability.
  • Experience supporting design reviews and integrating handling and transportation requirements into hardware or tooling designs.
  • Experience performing risk assessments, investigating anomalies, and implementing corrective actions.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to convey technical information clearly across engineering and operations teams.
  • Experience in a fast-paced, highly integrated production or spaceflight hardware environment.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure safe, compliant movement of flight hardware and ground support equipment using proper procedures and team coordination.
  • Develop and maintain engineered lift and move plans for flight hardware, tooling, and ground support equipment.
  • Assess critical lifts and transport operations, including mass properties, center of gravity, load paths, structural capability, stability, rigging interfaces, and handling constraints.
  • Review lift and move documentation for technical adequacy and compliance with Boeing procedures, customer requirements, and applicable industry standards.
  • Provide on-site engineering support for lift and move operations, including planning, walkdowns, readiness reviews, execution support, troubleshooting, and post-job lessons learned.
  • Coordinate with manufacturing, operations, design engineering, tooling, quality, safety, and logistics teams.
  • Support development of rigging concepts, lifting fixture requirements, transport configurations, and equipment selection for cranes, SPMTs, straddle carriers, aerial lifts, and other specialized handling equipment.
  • Participate in hardware and tooling design reviews to integrate lifting, handling, transportation, access, and maintainability requirements.
  • Conduct risk assessments, hazard evaluations, and engineering trade studies for nonstandard, complex, or first-time lift and move activities.
  • Support anomaly investigations, root cause analysis, corrective action development, and continuous improvement of lift and move processes.
  • Interface with suppliers, support contractors, and internal stakeholders to ensure specialized lift and transport solutions meet technical and operational needs.
  • Communicate lift activities, document actions, and raise issues; maintain attention to detail, safety, housekeeping, and corporate policies and standards.
  • Work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Provide engineering support for off-shift, weekend, or time-sensitive operations as required by program needs.
  • Perform or support critical lifts and moves, serve as Lift Person In Charge (LPIC), and operate or support crane, SPMT, and aerial lift equipment.
