About The Position

The Criminal Justice Instructor at CVCC delivers high-quality instruction and hands-on training to prepare students for impactful careers in public safety and law enforcement. Operating under the direction of the Chief of Security and Law Enforcement Education, this role focuses on classroom excellence, curriculum delivery, and student mentorship. The ideal candidate blends deep field experience with a passion for teaching, ensuring all courses meet strict state credentialing standards while equipping the next generation of law enforcement professionals. This position is a hybrid position which will also have campus security responsibilities. The idea candidate will also have law enforcement experience and training. This position will perform those duties as specified by the Chief of Security and Law Enforcement Education.

Requirements

  • Certified as an instructor specifically through the North Carolina Criminal Justice or Sheriff’s Education and Training Standards Commission.
  • Certified to deliver and administer the C J Standards block for new Instructor training.
  • Certified as a QA for BLET
  • Minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of progressive, active field experience in law enforcement or criminal justice.
  • Established relationships with the law enforcement community.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively teach diverse student populations.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited institution in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, or a closely related field.
  • Documented experience teaching in a community college, university, or police academy setting.
  • Ability to translate complex legal and tactical concepts into accessible, engaging lessons.
  • Exhibits high ethical standards, integrity, and command presence for students to emulate.
  • Comfortable utilizing educational technology, learning management systems (like Canvas or Blackboard), and tactical simulators.
  • Ability to quickly be certified to administer the state SMI program.

Nice To Haves

  • A candidate that still hold a local law enforcement sworn status is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver instruction: Lead classroom, laboratory, and tactical training sessions in criminal justice and law enforcement topics.
  • Engage students: Utilize diverse instructional methods to accommodate different learning styles and maximize student success.
  • Maintain rigor: Grade coursework, administer exams, and evaluate student performance fairly and consistently.
  • Update coursework: Incorporate modern policing strategies, legal updates, and evolving industry trends into daily lessons.
  • Security Duties: These duties will but not be limited to such activities as moving campus money, monitoring and enforcing parking violations and enforcing other college policies as needed.
  • The candidate will also be assigned to assist Human Resources with employee issues and Student Services with issues involving students as requested.
  • The position will also perform other duties as directed by the Chief of Security and Law Enforcement Education.
  • Advise students: Guide individuals through academic pathways, graduation requirements, and career opportunities.
  • Hold office hours: Provide regular academic assistance and mentorship outside of scheduled class times.
  • Foster inclusion: Maintain a safe, professional, and supportive learning environment for all students.
  • Follow state standards: Align all lesson plans and training modules as required with North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards.
  • Track attendance: Maintain accurate, up-to-date rosters and student records for state auditing and institutional reporting.
  • Manage equipment: Ensure training gear, driving simulators, or firing range equipment are used safely and maintained properly.
  • Collaborate internally: Participate in department meetings, professional development, and college-wide committees.
