About The Position

Writopia Lab, an award-winning 501(c)3 nonprofit, is seeking creative writing workshop instructors for its locations in Tenleytown, DC and Falls Church, Virginia. Writopia Lab runs writing workshops for children and teens aged 7 to 18, with the mission to foster joy, literacy, and critical thinking through creative writing. They aim to provide a safe, engaging, and inspiring environment for young writers that may not be available in schools.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree; MFA preferred.
  • Ability to reliably and consistently commute to workshop locations.
  • Desire and availability to commit to assigned workshops through the duration of the program.
  • Enthusiasm for and experience working with youth.
  • Experience mentoring youth and teens in creative writing required.
  • Published fiction and/or poetry and/or produced plays preferred.

Nice To Haves

  • Additional experience mentoring youth and teens in essay writing formats is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Lead in-person writing workshops for small groups of kids or teens.
  • Engage with young writers on a group and individual basis, encouraging goal setting and achievement in a fun and productive way.
  • Foster a supportive, collaborative, and safe workshop environment.
  • Navigate workshop dynamics to ensure all writers feel included and inspired.
  • Provide strength-based feedback regularly in workshops and complete end-of-trimester written feedback for families.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned.

Benefits

  • Hourly Pay: $25-$40 per hour for instructing (commensurate with experience); $18.40 per hour for administrative tasks.
