About The Position

The Staten Island Justice Center offers an array of programming for both youth and adults in Staten Island, focusing on engaging those with current or past justice system involvement. The Staten Island Justice Center is seeking a Court Liaison. Reporting to the Project Ready Program Manager, the Court Liaison will facilitate the program referral process shortly before or after a youth is arraigned. The Court Liaison will review all available information about each potentially eligible youth to determine whether they are suitable for the program. Once participants are enrolled in the program, the Court Liaison will provide written and verbal updates to the court including defense attorneys, Assistant District Attorneys, and Judges on a regular basis. The Court Liaison is also responsible for providing court coverage to various Criminal and Supreme Court parts, including specialized court initiatives and conducting screenings and assessments.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of one year in a related area, preferably as a criminal justice practitioner or 3-4 years’ experience in the criminal justice field as an equivalency.
  • Excellent writing skills and attention to detail are required.
  • Candidate must be skilled communicator able to work in multidisciplinary setting and maintain strong relationships with participants and partners in a courtroom setting, and with multiple agencies and organizations onsite and in the community.
  • Candidate must also enjoy working with a diverse population and be a team player.
  • Court-based work is a unique and demanding area of practice, and candidates must be open to constructive engagement with other professionals who have differing and, at times, competing perspectives.

Responsibilities

  • Communicate with prosecutors, defense attorneys, and other court staff about youth’s program eligibility.
  • Maintain daily presence Family Court presence to support program referrals, intakes and represent SIJC;
  • Ensure that all youth who are released to pretrial supervision are scheduled for intake;
  • Administer program intake to newly referred youth;
  • Track cases and manage multiple court room assignments;
  • Provide written and verbal case updates to the court and other court staff as needed including compliance reporting;
  • Assist with intakes of participants and administer assessment tools;
  • Facilitate orientation group sessions for program participants, as needed;
  • Maintain appropriate client information in electronic databases and hard files, including court assessment, screening and outcome information;
  • Assist with data entry as needed;
  • Participate in staff meetings and trainings;
  • Attend evening and weekend community events and meetings, as needed;
  • Perform other duties as necessary to support the Staten Island Justice Center and department activities as assigned by leadership; and
  • Additional tasks as necessary.
