About The Position

The Department of Biomedical Engineering of the Faculty of Medicine, McGill University, is seeking applications for a Course Lecturer for the 2026-2027 academic year to teach BMDE 558 Healthcare Startups and Entrepreneurship (3 credits). This course provides an introduction to healthcare entrepreneurship, focusing on the unique models and challenges of healthcare technology startups. A significant emphasis is placed on seeking venture capital investment in healthcare startup businesses, including medical technologies (MedTech), pharmaceuticals/biotechnology, research tools, healthcare IT, and digital health, and how these differ from one another.

Requirements

  • Understand how to identify a compelling business opportunity in healthcare
  • Understand how to develop a message to capture the attention of potential investors, including information on the market, the un-met medical need, the development plan, the financing requirements and, most importantly, how the investors will make money by investing in the idea
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the many challenges inherent to research, as well as external challenges from stakeholders involved in development of a product in healthcare
  • Identify events that signal the need to change direction or strategy, and explore different options throughout the difficult but rewarding journey of entrepreneurship
  • Illustrate what it takes to start a venture capital-backed healthcare company, and the role of the founder in managing risks and attracting the financing and human talent needed to execute
  • Bachelor of Science, Engineering, or Arts
  • More than 5 years in healthcare entrepreneurship/investing
  • Fluency in English and French (written and verbal) preferred
