About The Position

This position is for a Course Lecturer for Introduction to Oceanic Sciences (ATOC 182) for the Fall 2026 term. The course is 3 credits and focuses on oceanic sciences with an emphasis on physical oceanography. Topics covered typically include seawater properties, sea ice, air-sea interaction, seafloor topography, large-scale ocean circulation, waves, tides, the physical control of biological processes, the role of oceans in climate, and the impact of human activities. The Course Lecturer will prepare formal lectures, lead class discussions, administer tests and examinations, and mark assignments and tests. The lectures are 3 hours per week for 13 weeks, from August 31, 2026, to December 4, 2026. The expected enrollment is 150 students, which will determine the number of Teaching Assistants. Requirements

  • Must have a PhD in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, or a related field.
  • Must have prior experience teaching similar courses at McGill, or relevant teaching at a university or college level.
  • Must be authorized to work in Canada.
  • Must be willing to work in the province of Quebec.
  • Must have English communication skills, both verbally and in writing.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare formal lectures and lead class discussions on topics such as seawater properties, wind-driven and geostrophic ocean circulations, and possibly on ocean biogeochemistry and climate change related topics.
  • Administer tests and examinations in conformity with McGill regulations.
  • Mark assignments and tests and submit final grades online using McGill systems.
