Requirements

  • A solid grasp of wood species (Cedar, Fir, Pine), grades and dimensions (nominal vs. actual).
  • Ability to quickly calculate square footage, linear footage, and waste factors for customer estimates.
  • A thick skin and a helpful attitude; the ability to handle the "morning rush" of busy contractors who need to get back to the job site.
  • Familiarity with related building materials like composite decking (Trex/Azek), siding, and insulation.
  • Handling phone inquiries while simultaneously managing a line of in-person customers.
  • 1–3 years in retail sales or construction.
  • High School Diploma required.
  • Must be able to pass a drug test within 72 hours of offer acceptance.
  • Must be able to pass a background check.

  • Many top performers are former "field" workers (framers or carpenters) looking to move into an indoor role.

Responsibilities

  • Consulting with customers to determine their project needs (e.g., pressure-treated for decks vs. kiln-dried for framing) and suggesting the correct fasteners, hardware, and accessories.
  • Processing sales, quotes, and "will-call" tickets using industry-specific software (like Spruce, Epicor, or BizTrack).
  • Calculating "board footage" and providing accurate pricing based on current lumber commodity markets.
  • Communicating via radio or computer with yard staff to ensure orders are pulled correctly and loaded safely into customer vehicles.
  • Keeping the retail showroom stocked, labeled, and clean-specifically managing high-turnover items like tape measures, saw blades, and structural screws.
  • Identifying high-volume contractors and passing their information to the Outside Sales team for long-term account management.
