About The Position

Baystate Health is seeking a Counselor to join their Mental Health Unit team at Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield, MA. This is a part-time position, 24 hours per week, with a second shift schedule (3P-11:30P) and requires working every other weekend and holiday. The role involves performing a variety of duties related to patient management, therapeutic interaction, and physical care for patients on the Inpatient Psychiatric Unit, under the direction of a Registered Nurse. The position emphasizes a multidisciplinary team approach, patient safety, therapeutic milieu, and professional growth. Requirements

  • Counselor I: High School Diploma, Minimum 1 year behavioral health experience
  • Counselor II: Bachelor's Degree, Minimum 2 years behavioral health experience OR If no Bachelor's Degree, 6 years of behavioral health experience
  • Counselor III: Bachelor's Degree, Minimum 4 years behavioral health experience OR If no Bachelor's Degree, 8 years of behavioral health experience
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Excellent computer skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Age Specific Competencies in-service or equivalent training.
  • Behavior Management Training/Collaborative Problem Solving.
  • Restraint and Seclusion in-service or equivalent training
  • Basic Life Support - American Heart Association
  • Certified Crisis Prevention - Crisis Prevention Institute

Responsibilities

  • Participates in a Multidisciplinary Team approach to patient care, collaborating with team members to evaluate patients, plan therapy, and develop treatment goals.
  • Provides a safe environment by conducting daily sharps checks, intervening appropriately during crises, monitoring safety, and reporting hazards.
  • Documents patient mental status, social behavior, and progress toward goals daily, including monitoring sheets, restraints, seclusions, and EMR entries.
  • Provides a therapeutic milieu by assessing patient status, counseling patients, referring physical problems to the RN, initiating and implementing plans of care for ADL needs, identifying and addressing patient knowledge deficits, and providing 1:1 intervention when indicated.
  • Demonstrates accountability for personal and professional growth by adhering to program philosophy, policies, and standards, attending mandatory in-services, and collaborating with supervisors on professional goals.
  • Demonstrates effective use of behavior management principles and Collaborative Problem-Solving techniques, developing and implementing special programming, and assisting co-workers.
  • Demonstrates competency for one-to-one observation of patients based on department and unit specific needs.
  • Must complete department specified de-escalation training within 30 days of hire.
