About The Position

A Corrections Officer supervises inmates assigned to the Lafourche Parish Correctional Complex in accordance with established policies, regulations, and procedures. The role involves maintaining discipline and order among inmates, observing their conduct, and ensuring security within the correctional facility. Officers are responsible for escorting inmates, preparing incident reports, and maintaining equipment. They may also assist other law enforcement agencies and perform duties of a Transportation Officer or Deputy as needed.

Requirements

  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age
  • Must be legally able to work in the United States
  • Associates degree or equivalent from a university or college; or, six (6) months to one (1) year related experience and/or training; or, equivalent combination of education and experience preferred
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of citizens and/or other employees
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent; and, to interpret statistical tables and graphs
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations
  • P.O.S.T. Certification Required
  • Firearm Certification Required Annually
  • Must possess a valid Louisiana Drivers License
  • Must possess basic knowledge of technical and professional methods, practices, and procedures in the delivery of law enforcement services
  • Possess basic skills in the operation of computers and copy machines
  • Basic knowledge of computer word processing software, business English, spelling, punctuation, and methods and techniques in record keeping and filing systems required
  • Must have the emotional stability, maturity, and physical stamina and ability to effectively handle verbal disparagements and physical aggression from hostile individuals, inmates, and criminal suspects and perpetrators
  • Must possess the ability to perform job duties in highly stressful situations
  • Must have the ability to deal courteously and effectively with the general public, governmental officials, and other employees of the Lafourche Parish Sheriffs Office
  • Must be able to work on 12-hour rotating shifts
  • Regularly stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear; and taste and smell
  • Occasionally required to drive a vehicle in the transporting of prisoners
  • Must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds
  • Must be able to run and jump

Responsibilities

  • Place personal restraints such as handcuffs on inmates for transporting
  • Observe conduct and behavior of inmates to prevent disturbances and escapes
  • Supervise and direct inmates to appropriate holding locations
  • Monitor inmate behavior and actions for evidence of prohibited activities, infraction of rules, and unsatisfactory attitude
  • Report observations to supervisors
  • Employ weapons or physical force to maintain discipline and order among inmates, if necessary
  • Escort inmates to and from holding and cell areas
  • Prepare written reports concerning incidents of inmate disturbances or injuries
  • Operate radio to receive instructions and notify supervisors of work efforts in progress
  • Maintain weapons and equipment in functional and clean condition
  • Report malfunctions in facility equipment to supervisors for corrective action
  • Accompany medical personnel in conducting medical examinations
  • Answer incoming telephone calls and route to appropriate personnel
  • Provide guidance and training to newly assigned correctional officers
  • Cooperate with efforts of other law enforcement agencies in conducting investigations and joint law enforcement efforts
  • Assist in providing warnings to the general public before, during, and after emergencies/disasters; and, assist in the facilitation of public evacuation efforts
  • Perform all other duties of a Transportation Officer, as needed
  • Perform the duties of a Deputy, as needed
