About The Position

The D.A.R.E. Officer works with the Lafourche Parish School System in providing classroom educational programs to prevent and reduce drug abuse and violence among children and youth.

Requirements

  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age and legally able to work in the United States.
  • Associates degree or equivalent from a university or college; or, six (6) months to one (1) year related experience and/or training; or, equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of citizens and/or other employees.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent; and, to interpret statistical tables and graphs.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • P.O.S.T. Certification Required.
  • Firearm Certification Required Annually.
  • D.A.R.E. Instructor Certification Required.
  • Must possess a valid Louisiana Drivers License.
  • Must possess basic knowledge of technical and professional methods, practices, and procedures in the delivery of law enforcement services.
  • Must be a certified D.A.R.E. Instructor.
  • Must possess basic skills in the operation of personal computers, typewriters, calculators, copy machines, and fax machines.
  • Basic knowledge of computer word processing software, business English, spelling, punctuation, and methods and techniques in record keeping and filing systems required.
  • Must have the emotional stability, maturity, and physical stamina to effectively handle verbal disparagements and physical aggression from hostile individuals, inmates, and criminal suspects and perpetrators.
  • Must possess the ability to perform job duties in highly stressful situations.
  • Must have the ability to deal courteously and effectively with the general public, governmental officials, and other employees of the Lafourche Parish Sheriffs Office.
  • Regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch.

Responsibilities

  • Implement D.A.R.E. program curricula, which meet the goals of the federal Drug Free Schools and Communities Act, as well as the program objectives contained in the funding/grant agreement.
  • Establish rapport with parish school officials, neighborhood groups, and individuals to identify and resolve grievances, problems, and needs.
  • Assist civic groups and local governmental officials in planning programs and services designed to heighten awareness and knowledge about alcohol and other drug dependencies, and their associated harmful effects, as assigned.
  • Assist in conducting special events such as day camps and other similar types of events.
  • Lecture on specific aspects, functions, and goals of the Lafourche Parish Sheriffs Office (LPSO) D.A.R.E. Program to civic, school, and other community groups, as assigned.
  • Submit reports to supervisors and recommend changes in program activities.
  • Provide training to newly appointed personnel assigned to the School Services Section.
  • Maintain appropriate records in the proper administration of D.A.R.E. grant program; and, complete periodic reports.
  • Perform the duties of Deputy, as needed.
  • Cooperate with efforts of other law enforcement agencies in conducting training and seminars.
  • Monitor supplies and equipment and requisitions replacement items, as needed.
  • Run errands required in the proper functioning of the Division, which include but are not limited to transporting trustees, delivering supplies, and transporting materials and documents between offices.
